I recently ran across a handheld dance-pad controller that was released in Japan, and it immediately alleviated some serious nerd-shame I had felt for awhile, as I often played DDR at home with my handheld back in the day. I didn't have the space or money for a proper dance pad. Hell, I still do it. I've gotten some of my best scores while playing handheld, and it was definitely an invaluable resource to help me with my accuracy between visits to the arcade. Plus, it was just plain fun, because I never got tired!

The thing is, I had never heard it mentioned by other players at tourneys or in passing, so I thought maybe I was breaking some unknown taboo or something  Grin I didn't have many other ddr playing friends, and aside from actually going to the arcade, I was not super-immersed in the sub-culture.

My question is: Have I been playing the ddr equivalent of bumpers for bowling for half of my life, or do any of you do this in your spare time as well?

In my opinion no because it's more like practicing songs on StepMania. It's just training in advance, and you still face the same difficulties. You can still fail songs (given that you don't have FailOff lol) and deal with the same mental processing. You've still got the bumpers off, and you're just playing mini-bowling.

Of course, if you try to pass off a hand-controller score as a 'with your feet' score, people will laugh at you.

Wait, you said handheld and you referenced a Japanese product. Is it the DDR attachment for the Gameboy?

Also, everyone I know uses Stepmania (the free PC version of DDR) and many got very skilled playing it. It perfects your pattern reading abilities and timing. No one really cares what you do to enjoy the game as long as you aren't passing off home scores for scores done on an actual machine with your own feet. Even then, unless it's a super hard to get score, not many people are going to call foul or anything.

Probably talking about this old controller:

Controller DDR was really big when it was still being released for PS2. We used to try and AAA all of DDR Extreme JP.

I would love to get one of those in my collection. They're so ridiculous. =D

Stepmania (Or any program playing with your fingers) tests everything except the physical part which admittedly is a huge part. I like to work out wonky and complex songs on keyboard before I attempt them on foot. I also don't think I would have EVER gotten the stops in Dream to Nightmare down if it wasn't for Stepmania. Still, to me it is only half the game, but a very fun and beneficial half.

no lol, I'm not lying about scores. It just felt like I was the only one doing that for the longest time Tongue I can't begin to count the hours I played training mode

For all those saying playing with your hands isn't impressive as playing with your feet, I agree that most of the time this is true. However, the best stepmania players have put in just as much time and effort as the best ITG players. For example, Staiain, the best Stepmania player in the world (who's been playing for like 10 years), can play songs like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpw4_UXDoTU

So I definatley wouldn't discourage you from playing with either your hands or your feet because you can be great with either!

Oh, I don't mean to imply that playing with your hands is irrelevant or useless.  I used to do quite a bit of that.  I was just trying to say that passing a 10 foot song with your fingers is much easier than doing it with your feet, as there's less time delay between 'move this finger' and 'pressed this button' than there is between 'move this foot' and 'pressed this panel', along with the whole stamina issue.

You're right Nykkel, I have been able to AA or AAA any song with my hands, while this number is GREATLY reduced on my feet. Spins are my kryptonite, cause I play on my toes.  Though I'm pretty sure i couldn't pass that stepmania song from the video on either one.Tongue

Spins are AWESOME. I <3 Xenon and all those spinny songs.
