Neowiz Internet
September 03, 2012, 06:07:55 PM - ORIGINAL POST -

Hello everyone,

Jeremie here, from Neowiz Internet.

I would like to introduce you to a new upcoming title in the DJMAX family.
The game is developed by Pentavision, the studio behind DJMAX Technika and is scheduled to launch on iOS in Fall 2012.

I can't say much more about it for the moment but I invite you to check the DJMAX Teaser Page for more details in the near future: http://ppl.cm/djmaxteaser
YouTube video link: http://youtu.be/XbWp2R9ARr4

Cheers everyone!

Sweet graphics as usual. Pentavision/Neowiz never fail to disappoint there. Is there any additional info you can share regarding gameplay? The pretty logo tells me nothing about how the game works. Will it be similar to Tap Sonic? Technika?

As someone who plays Technika occasionally in the arcade (not as much as I'd like to play), and who plays TapSonic on my iPad, I'm looking forward to this!

Hello everybody,

Finally some gameplay video for DJMAX RAY on iOS!

You'll have noticed the similarity with an existing Neowiz Internet game, although gameplay is different and features 8 levels of "Fever" among other things.

Besides, DJMAX RAY syncs melody to your touch for a more immersive feeling.

Your comments are welcome!

It is disappointing to see that DJMAX RAY is practically "TapSonic v2" instead of it being a Technika based game or something new.

We already have this game for iOS (and Android) in the form of TapSonic. We'd like a Technika type game now. Smiley

I disagree!  The iPhone form factor seriously limits what you can do with technika-style timeline-sweeping gameplay.  Technika Tune already feels a bit cramped, and it's on a substantially bigger screen.  I like TapSonic, but find the lack of keysounding and weird songlist kinda lame.  It's pretty clearly marketed towards people who don't play the other DJMax games first.  Since DJMAX RAY is keysounded, this almost forces Neowiz/Pentavision to be more selective with which content they include; the amount of work to add a new song is substantially higher.

iPads have plenty of room for Technika style gameplay.

BlueSS, sfxazure,

Thank you both for your comments. Both criticism and praise are appreciated, as well as suggestions.
Indeed, porting Technika to an iPhone while maintaining the same quality standard as the other Technika titles is still challenging, although it might be possible on iPad.

Still, TAPSONIC and DJMAX RAY are pretty different.
First, the song selection, where TAPSONIC is clearly KPOP-oriented, while DJMAX RAY's songs bear more similitude with previous DJMAX titles.
The gameplay too, is different, although it might look the same at first glance.
As sfxazure pointed out, DJMAX RAY features the Key Sound system (as well as 8 levels of Fever).
Lastly, the game will be Free+IAP, but it will feature sound packs available as one-time purchases (buy once, play forever).

Well, I guess I said enough for the moment, but keep the comments coming Smiley

Thanks for updating us with the news. Smiley

I just downloaded it, and here are my initial thoughts (mostly comparing it to TapSonic):

1) Fonts and graphics are very pixelated and distorted when stretched to the 2x size on an original iPad. TapSonic graphics were polished and looked good stretched, so I know this can be improved.
2) Limited song list due to the keysounds. I loved how TapSonic had TONS of k-pop, DJMax songs, and American songs all mixed together.
3) I really love the micro-transaction payment system TapSonic uses. Purchasing a song pack is a very.... typical way of offering DLC; however, I can't preview any of the songs before playing them, nor see what the difficulties would be. That's a big problem for anyone not familiar with the songs.
4) This is along the lines of 3, but from loading the app it feels like you immediately want me to buy more packs in order to enjoy the game. TapSonic was much less "in your face" about getting you to purchase songs.
5) Players in the US who haven't played TapSonic don't know what PMANG+ is. The game doesn't do a good job explaining it (neither does TapSonic though). I let this slide a lot with TapSonic, since the original required me to download it via the Korean App store, but since this DJMax release isn't limited to just Korea, it's odd how much PMANG+ is integrated considering you can't even view the website for the service in English.
http://www.pmangplus.com/

6) You might want to update the graphics in the Apple App store to not have Engrish translations and misspellings. (I attached in this post two that need to be fixed.)
7) MOVE THE FEVER BAR OUT OF THE MIDDLE OF THE SCREEN PLEASE.   Angry  This position for the bar makes it much harder to see the notes.

On the positive side:
1) The keysounds really make it feel like an official DJMax game. That part is great.
2) New songs not in other editions/games is great as well.

I really don't want to be a complainer here. I know new games take a lot of work, and I love that we're getting new music games. Smiley

I hope others can chime in and give some additional feedback. For me personally; TapSonic is way more fun for me, and more polished overall. The keysounds don't make up for the other parts where the game currently falls short.

[On a slightly unrelated note, the Android apps for Tapsonic haven't been updated in months, and they're listed as incompatible with the latest versions of the Android OS. Are they going to be updated?]

BLueSS, thanks a lot for your feedback.
I think it's well argumented so no complain here, rather the contrary.
I am not sure how the "issues" you mentioned will be addressed but be sure that I will forward your suggestions to the staff in charge!
Just regarding the screenshots, we have noticed it too and will update soon but thanks Smiley

I downloaded this last night and thought it was fun. I feel like I just can't seem to get it synced right. I wish they had a calibration tool, like Stepmania and Rock Band.

How is there not a song pack with End of the Moonlight. Sad

DJ Max Classic 5 was just released a few days ago for iOS, and End of the Moonlight is the unlockable song for it.  I have no idea what song packs are available for Android, though.

Ah, good to know! The Android version is only up to Classic 3. The temptation to dump $30 to purchase all of the existing music packs is strong...
