I saw this while browsing the ZIV forums. Aaron (from AIJ) wrote up a 85 page book(?) on the history of the Japanese DDR community. I'm a few pages in and am finding it very interesting and wanted to pass it on.

Heh, it's actually over 100 pages now.  It is 28 revisions in and I *think* most of the major events and trends/mindsets are in there.

Still, if there is anything that is blatantly wrong or should be touched up, please feel free to let me know either here, on ziv, aij, my FB wall, or livejournal...or email I guess.

Legally, I think Konami would sue the pants off me if I tried getting it published.  Maybe there is some self-publishing site I could use to skirt around that?  (I need help with the design and look when everything is in place anyways)

I'm not legally savvy, but I don't see how they could sue you for publishing a book about the community surrounding their game. I think you should investigate it a bit more to find out, but as long as you're not out-right defaming them throughout the book, then I don't see it being any different than writing a wikipedia article in book format. I think people have already published books about Street Fighter players and other niche arcade groups. I don't see how this would be any different.

Btw, it's been a great read so far, even though I'm only a couple dozen pages in. Thanks for the hard work!

Wow! I just read the PDF file.
It was very enlightening to see a few subtle differences between the Japanese ddr culture compared to ours. Thank you for putting all that effort and documentation into your work, Aaron.

..To critique it, I don't think your average gamer would catch some of the older ddr references that you make as you shift your terminology from Maniac/Trick to Heavy/Standard, etc. Depends on your intended target reader, I suppose. Definitely straight up the alley of most members on this site~

Definitely got inspired along the way to look up a couple of mentioned players aside from MegamanX and Yasu that were new to me. Also while reading it, my thoughts often went back to my own short series of arcade runs during my two-week visit to Japan ^^
Looking forward to DDR X2.
