ORIGINAL THREAD WAS HERE: http://www.pnwbemani.net/bemani-discussion/pnw-simfiles/30/
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I figured I'd make a thread for those of us in the PNW who've made custom stepcharts. I'd like to see local charts posted here for download, review, sharing, and (hopefully constructive) criticism. I'd also like to see any custom charts from local tournaments eventually get posted to this thread too. I look forward to seeing what everyone has to offer.

I'll start things off by sharing two some charts I've recently written.

Update: You can find all my charts at http://techno-hut.com/download/suko_stepcharts/

Stamp on the Ground by Italo Brothers

Summer party by Smile.DK
Singles: ( 4 / 6 / 7 / 9 )

As always, comments, constructive criticism, and bug/error reports are always welcome!

P.S. You can find preview videos of most of my charts here:

Here are some Beta Steps for my first submission. There are a few mines that I'm not overly thrilled about the placement, and I'm debating whether to keep the hand freeze in the middle, but other than that, this is more or less the concept I'll have for this song.

Obligatory 9 entry to make sure some songs are playable

Obligatory 9 entry to make sure some songs are playable
Isn't that the truth? It makes Suko sad that some people will completely pass over a song if the chart isn't a 9+. There're some really great 8's out there, but ITG's Expert difficulty kind of made people think that anything less than 9 is for noobs.

I'm also tempted to have one of my four submitted files for S.P.E.R.G.I.N2 be a boss file to somewhat ensure that ratings get fleshed out for the tournament. In that case, would anyone be interested in a 13 like this?

No.

I don't even need to check it out to know. Then again, I can't pass 13s, so I'm biased.

It's been over half a year, and there is no talk either public or even underground (to what I've found) about plans to make ITG Rebirth 3.

I can understand, people are getting tired of 4-panel and the same crew doesn't want to spend literally hundreds of hours on a project that at least with the latest installment of Rebirth 2 did not get as much praise and recognition as was expected, especially since Rebirth more or less got quite positive reception.

Well, I'm NOT tired of 4-panel and I don't feel like only playing charts that only have Expert Single steps between 12 and 18. As part of the community AND as a step chart artist of (if I do say so myself) some skill, I believe that it is completely and utterly foolish and silly of me to simply wait for other people to try and keep ITG alive, especially after they frankly HAVE kept it alive more than most people in the community. It's time for me to quit complaining about the lack of fleshed out charts and the complete absence of doubles and get off my butt.

As I am done with my S.P.E.R.G.I.N 2 charts and am fairly confident that I will not win since, let's face it, I'm not the most skilled person participating, I'm going to put near all of my 4-panel energy into keeping the game alive.

I am here to make a 70 song "ITG" pack. Actual pack name pending, but I want ITG in the title to show that like Rebirth, this is a spiritual successor.

I want the difficulties fleshed out to both challenge the pros and have selection for the beginners and intermediate. I want charts that feel "official" but aren't afraid to be unique. I want to keep ITG alive as long as I can, and I will definitely try.

Currently, out of 70 songs, I was thinking this might be a possible good spread of difficulty

2 15's (We had one in rebirth 2, can't avoid this difficulty now)
3 14's
5 13's
9 12's
14 11's
18 10's
19 9's

All of these are give and take of course since I don't have a complete song list (but I definitely have ideas).

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN HELPING WITH THIS MONUMENTAL ENDEAVOR TO KEEP ITG ALIVE, I AM CURRENTLY INTERESTED IN SONG SUGGESTIONS. ALL SONG CUTS THAT I USE FOR THE PACK WILL BE BETWEEN 95 AND 150 SECONDS, THOUGH LONGER SONGS CAN BE PICKED AS LONG AS WE PUT IT IN AN APPROPRIATE LENGTH CUT.

Stepcharts are not currently being made, but if you are SUPER zealous, I would be TOTALLY interested in having other step chart artists to make it more of a community project. I am somewhat prepared to make 630 charts, but I don't really want to make that many and I believe other people would have other interpretations and thus would have stylistic variety.

To feel official "ITG", I will happily consider songs from artists that have been in the ITG series and am completely open to new artists with great, dancy music. I will NOT accept ANY official songs from Bemani or other rhythm game companies, but WILL happily accept licenses that those franchises may have used. Since, like Rebirth, nobody will receive monetary compensation, I need not worry too much about copyright laws. This is an unofficial pack that I hope to have widespread popularity and thus is not sanctioned by any company.

Cool beans? Cool beans. I will post updates on the song list when I get a chance. If this project actually gets off the ground, than this post should probably get its own thread, but I do not know what will happen.

Have fun this summer!

I'm interested in helping with this, but I do have some concerns;

First, you definitely need as many stepchart writers as possible. Nothing stinks more than having an entire pack of songs all taste like they're a variation of vanilla (ZIM, FLASH, or any ITG pack ever made that's written by 1 dude).

Second, You need to get multiple artists working on the different difficulties. Example, Keby writes an expert chart for Song A and I could write the Hard chart. This would at least break up the monotomy a bit. Foy and KaW did this repeatedly for ITG1 & 2.

Third, Doubles charts. GOOD doubles charts. Who here can write them? I like doubles, but I suuuuuuuuuuuuuck at writing doubles charts. And as I mentioned above, if we only have 1 person writing doubles charts, they're all going to feel similar and boring. Also, ~70 doubles charts written by 1 dude is brutal and will require a lot of time. If you want to get this done anytime before the end of 2 years from now, you need probably 5 - 10 guys writing charts pretty regularly to get this thing made.

Fourth, how do you get noticed? The reason Rebirth 1 and ITG3 were so popular were in their completeness. Not just a lot of songs, but double charts, marathons, survival courses, etc. Also, they came out at a time when the customs community was obsessed with retarded, boring, stamina whore charts like UberRave and Air. Those packs came out and breathed some fresh life into the dance scene. Times have changed and the cohesion that used to keep the community on the same track has deteriorated.

Lastly, and most importantly; It seems like the community is diminishing faster than I've ever seen (and I've been around since 2002). You have the hardcore crowd doing their 14+ stepcharts and basically circle-jerking to one another, and then you have everyone else who is pretty much doing their own thing without any sense of direction or cohesion.

I really, REALLY hate to suggest it, but I honestly feel like DDR/ITG is in it's twilight years. I used to be the one who stood up against the nay-sayers claiming "DDR is dead". But with the lack of participation on all the DDR/ITG related forums, I just can't be so optimistic anymore.

I know, people have been saying it for years, but look around. Go to AIJ and check out the main threads and how many new topics there are...very, very few. Same goes for ZIV, Bemani Style, and here. I mean, heck - I just tried hosting a competition for REAL prizes that I paid for. I wanted to peak the interest of this community and the feedback was abysmal. I'm sorry if I'm throwing water onto your fire here, but I would look around and ask yourself if such a massive undertaking would be worth it. Or, will it be too little, too late for the community?

Edit: I'm anxious to see how much participation we get at SPERGIN. I'm really hoping for a good turnout to change my opinions and make my believe in something again.

All your concerns are 110% valid, and I assure you, I've thought of them myself, but frankly, I'm going to write a crap-ton of simfiles whether or not they get played. If no one but me plays my charts, I will not consider it a massive waste of time. I love making charts. I've literally made over 1,000 edits in my life and over 50 similes from scratch over the years I've been playing.

You hesitate to say that dance games are in their twilight? They're dead. Not to scare anyone, offend anyone, or otherwise start a debate whether they're dead or not, but they're pretty much dead in my opinion. That's literally the ENTIRE REASON why I would be doing this. I can't assume that more charts will be coming out on a regular basis anymore, at least things below 15 or ANY doubles charts, and speaking of doubles...

I can write a good doubles chart, but you hit the nail on the head of my biggest concern. Doubles charts take roughly twice as long to write (surprise surprise) and in my opinion make it more obvious to see your individual style as a stepper as their are SOOO many possibilities in doubles and a lot of them just aren't considered by just one stepper. Still, at least in my opinion, having 70 doubles charts that have a similar tone to them is better than being relegated to ONLY playing singles. Besides, M. Emirzian wrote about 75% of the official Expert doubles charts back in the day and there is variety, though admittedly I can tell he stepped a chart by the types of across the pad crossovers he tends to favor.

I expect almost everyone to shy away from a task this big and I know it's not ideal. I don't have corporate funding and I am one person, but I am dedicated and love this game. I may not be the best player or even the most enthusiastic rhythm game fan out there, but I sure as hell don't want an entire genre to die when I still love it. I am a nostalgic dude, I play games from the early to mid 90's all the time, and I will play dance games for a long time to come as well, but as less and less arcades maintain or even have cabinets it falls on the responsibility of the fans themselves to keep it alive if they so choose. I choose to.

Tyr, I like your optimism and I'm thrilled you're trying to do SOMETHING to help and contribute to the community.

Like many projects, I think you need to get it started. Once it gains enough steam, others will jump on board. VERY few people have the gumption to actually get involved in something when it's on the ground floor, but once you have something to show that's worthwhile, (ironically) that's when people will come out to offer their help.

I fall into this category. I would love to help, but I admit that I've had nearly 0 motivation to do anything at all lately (I blame the f*cking weather). If I see something starting to get rolling, you can count on my help. I do want to get into writing doubles charts, but I think medium or MAYBE hard charts are all you could ask of me at the moment.

Regarding song suggestions, I would love to see 1 or 2 songs from OC REMIX used. Everyone likes a little remixed MegaMan tune, right?

I look forward to seeing what you get going.

Thanks, Suko! FWIW, you don't have to strip out the other difficulties. The only requirement is that you have an Expert chart (which is the chart we'll use for the tournament).

So I finally finished 5 of my own simfiles, complete with charts on every difficulty, single and double (6 if you want to count one without a DDR Challenge / ITG Expert chart), that I want to share. It took me a long time to make all these charts, so I hope you enjoy!

http://zenius-i-vanisher.com/v5.2/viewsimfilecategory.php?categoryid=821

List of songs so far (in order of completion):
1. エスケープ / 八王子P feat. 巡音ルカ
2. B L A C K O U T / 八王子P feat. IA
3. Leia (八王子P Remix) / ゆよゆっぺ feat. 巡音ルカ
4. Get Lucky / Daft Punk ft. Pharrell Williams
5. Reach Out To The Truth (Moonbug REMIX) / Moonbug
6. INSOMNIA / ジャカルタファンクブラザーズ

Graphics are lacking right now since I don't have any experience in graphic design, but surely, the steps are what's most important, right? Smiley

Also, Stepchart Artist achievement, please?

@ Kevin,

Hey buddy!  Grin

Abbye and I previewed all the charts you've posted and they seem to be a lot of fun!

Abbye and I particularly like the last chart! I'm not sure if running crossovers were intended but there are a few within the preview of the last chart.

Also, I would really like to play these charts at ACME so we can give you proper feed back. Hopefully Tony can put these on the machine. Have you spoken to him about this yet?  Huh

NICE WORK!

Thanks guys!

For the last two charts, the crossovers were actually intended, although it may seem and feel out of place.

  • We Are One (10)'s were intended,
  • but Who's That Chick (13)'s may feel a little weird.
And then I shove in some violating footspeed Smiley
  • Pump It Up (12) , for a 140bpm is ridden with candles.. enjoy
  • Jawn (10) is almost all crossover runs
  • and the RWBY Theme (This Will Be The Day 15) is stamina.
