- ORIGINAL POST -
Hey all. I know most people on Facebook have probably already seen/heard about this, but I wanted to start a post here because A) I love PNWBemani.net and B) Some people just don't use FB or have Kyle Ward friended.
Kyle Ward and
Step Revolution
are introducing a new dance game called Stepmania X (or perhaps Step Mania X?). It will use four panels (similar to DDR/ITG), but will also have the center panel like PIU. I snipped an image from Facebook of the Arcade setup (see attached image).
Video showing the music selection:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nqvhS44hC8
It definitely looks really interesting. From reading Kyle's Facebook posts over the last 12 months, it seems like he has made entirely new hardware specifically geared towards the needs of hardcore dance game players. It also sounds like this new hardware will be able to be easily installed on existing dance cabinets like In the Groove 2 and possibly DDR machines. There has been no price points mentioned yet, but it does seem like this machine is being targeted at both arcades and hardcore dance gamers for use in their own homes.
So far the only negative I have heard is that the screen can shake a bit when a heavy player is using the machine. This could be because the screen and main body of the cabinet are resting on the front of the pads. This also means that adjusting the screen farther back isn't an option. It also looks like this may not be able to be made into a single-pad setup for home use with the current design (DDR Solo style).
These are minor things, but as a 200cm tall player who weighs over 250lbs, the screen wobble and how close it is might affect me. I prefer the cabinet (screen) on my ITG cabinet to be ~ 2ft away from the pads so I don't have to crank my neck down super far just to see the screen.
All-in-all, it is a very impressive setup and I'll be keeping an eye on it as it progresses. If you're interested to see more, check out Kyle's facebook page where there's videos and a lot of additional photos of people using the new machine.

Update 09/29/2017:
Here's the shop page for Stepmania X:

The standard pad (1 player) costs $1337. The entire "arcade" setup hasn't been officially released yet, but it is expected to cost around $6000.

Have you heard anything about how the pads feel and if they were performing well? I'm very interested in purchasing a set when they are announced.

I haven't heard any direct comments about the pads, but there's a lot of info on Facebook and I must admit I've probably only seen a small portion of the comments out there.
Kyle just made a new post (On Facebook). Here's what he said:
Quote
What have we been working on for the last several months? A little (QUITE LARGE) project that is going to innovate the dancing game community called #StepManiaX!
Why StepManiaX?
1) A lot of our original core development team (from the old days) has returned to become united once again (with new people as well) to build a new product with a entirely new vision for the market. Competitive dance games are alive and well! We are going to prove that by building up this community further, and reaching new areas. Not just in a standardized competitive sense, but also returning to the roots of FUN and simple to use.
2) We are intentionally taking "steps" to brand outside of the typical arcade "dance game" umbrella. How? You'll see.
There is so much I want to say about #MAGFest and this product in general - but I will instead continue to provide you with developments as we prepare to launch it to our target markets in 2017.
This is just the beginning of something big and I can promise you that if you enjoyed elements of past projects; you will be extremely pleased with this! (and all the ways it can be utilized)
It was so great to spend time with all of you and big thanks to Tokyo Attack and Anthony for having us.
You guys are truly the best! I can't thank you enough for keeping me doing what I love to do after all these years. This project wouldn't be possible if it wasn't for the dreams of the fans and all the people who continue to support these efforts. I love you all and I THANK YOU sincerely.

The pad layout strikes me as really vulnerable to a lawsuit from Konami.

A few months back, Kyle went to Konami of Japan. We can only speculate as to why, but I'm 90% sure it has to do with his desire to produce StepManiaX. My guess is he spoke directly w/ people at Konami to confirm the situation regarding legal repercussions, etc.
In all reality, the DDR patent exclusion should be expiring in 2017/2018 anyways (if the patent for DDR was originally made 1 year prior to the original release of the game in 1998), so Konami can't really "sue" anymore. I mean, they could, but that would be a MUCH harder argument to win now than it was 15 years ago.

I'm really stoked about this game. I'm planning to get a new style pad as soon as possible. The tech inside the pads are amazing and it's exciting to have a new 5 panel challenge. Hoping SMX makes it to arcades, homes and gyms everywhere.

I've played on them and they feel better than a dedicab imo. They are USB compatible which means plug and play with mapping on OITG, SM5(or any SM for that matter) or arcade data. The tech is compatible with older cabs so you get that great feel with older DDR if desired.
The lights work independently from a machine so I don't think drivers are required to get lights working but we will see all of that later.
The bar is really wonderful. Bigger thicker and wider that a dedicab.
The frame is light weight and has easy moveability.
Most importantly no more pad sticking. Sensitivity can be modified to a users preference but playing bar or no bar won't result in stuck panels ect. HYPE!
