What kind of shoes do you guys wear when you play DDR, and does it affect your play at all?
I have DDR shoes that are very lightweight and thin soled, but they are beating the crap out of my knees now that I'm attempting harder stuff. However, I like the thin sole, as it makes them flexible and easier to heel/toe.
So, what are YOU wearing?

The venerable Vibram Polartec Merrell's. I've only bought 3 of these in all my years of playing. They last forever. Current pair has lasted 3 1/2 years, but I haven't really played in a couple of years. I get ill scores in these.
I did use hiking boots when I was playing edits pre-ITG in order to improve my stamina.

I seriously didn't believe all of the New Balance hype. Then I put my feet in them. The crosstrainers feel like walking on a cloud that's MADE OF GOD. Freaking amazing.
It's that and my pink and gray Nike runners. I find that running shoes help with harder runs, whereas crosstrainers are just generally padded and super comfortable. :O~

Whatever I have.
I only buy comfortable shoes though, but after that I play in whatever my shoes happen to be.

Depends on the situation:
Converse High-Tops for PA no bar
Running Shoes for PA w/ bar
Combat Boots for stamina training

I dislike New Balance. The pairs I've had have always felt rough on the feet after a lot of DDR/running, especially compared to Nikes. They also have always broken down on me faster and in stranger ways than other shoes. My worst experience was a pair that barely made it half a year and fell apart on the inside in a way that cut into my toes

Wow. No Nike Frees yet, I'm surprised.
I play in Puma Cabana Racers or Nike Dunk Lows. The Pumas are real lightweight.
I don't play in XC shoes because the grooves and grips on them make moving over brackets really annoying.

I've been using New Balance running shoes for a long time as Laura said. I started wearing them before I started playing these games in the first place (at least in part because my feet and fairly wide and most companies don't respect the fact that something wider than the smallest width exists). Before that (in middle school), I wore Nikes and pretty much any running caused immediate pain.
My current pair is one of the more "fashionable" varieties (picked up at a department store instead of a sporting goods store and cost over twice as much) and is much more comfortable than my old ones (I cannot explain how that's even possible) but they seem far less durable. If you want something almost exclusively for arcades that will last a long time (I only own one pair of shoes at a time other than the dress shoes buried in my closet; despite that, these tend to last me over a year... when I was walking 10+ miles a week around UW, going to Acme a few times a week, and using them for everything else I did), wait for Sports Authority to have a sale and go pick up a pair or two (they tend towards buy one get one half off for their sales) of running shoes.
These may also work will practice

I used New Balance for a long time, 512's to be specific, but now those are out of production and almost everything else New Balance makes has that gross robot look I hate so I'm playing with Sketchers. They are basically skate shoes and feel a little heavy but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I wear converse high tops. I've just gotten so used to using them. I always thought New Balances are ugly so I never even tried to get them. Sorry.

Nike free 5.0 or 7.0. I lost both of my pairs though so I'm using some other similar-style nike running shoes that are also incredibly light.

I've never understood how people can play in Converse. There's no arch support in those things.

I wear my converse for no bar because I play on 1x on my toes when I play no bar. I wear whatever random running shoes I have available if bar's an option.

I just got a pair of NB 993's in two weeks ago. I'm in love. These things fit like a dream and so far they feel like they're a worthy successor to my 3 year old NB 992's.

Anyone have any comments on the Nike Free 5.0 or 7.0 shoes? I've been thinking about maybe picking up another pair of athletic shoes (mostly for DDR). Would you suggest 5.0 or 7.0? Supposedly 5.0 are closer to being barefoot than being 7.0.

I wouldn't recommend the 7.0 shoes. The bottom of the shoe basically consists of rubber cubes and the ones on the back of my heel are already beginning to fall off after about a month of use. I'm just hoping they'll last a while longer.

I used New Balance 992s for the longest time, then switched to the 993s when they came out.

Scott right now I'm using Asics Cumulus. My shoes are built for running.
They're the lightest shoe I've ever worn, and have much better support than puma's. That's right, I'm smack talking puma's.
I personally recommend Nike Free's or Asics for any dance games.
