funny story:
So at the local tilt, we have a pretty old extreme (upgraded from 5th I think) and so the pads aren't the best. I can normally full combo any 9 and a couple 10s. But I couldn't full combo anything (1 or 2 pad misses everytime) and all this during 1 and a half years of playing nothing but 02, so I said, what the hell, let's give p1 a shot right? very first set, FC Across the Nightmare, 321 stars, and get my first ever arcade extra stage with Twin Bee ~Generation X~

Typically I play on the right side, but it doesn't really affect me much.

I almost always play P2 side, unless it's messed up really bad on a machine or someone else really wants to play it, then I'll use P1 side.

Avalon DDR- Left is the only playable side
GK DDR- Right, but left is fine
Bigals SN- Right, left has some issues

I play P2 Mirror for BeatMania IIDX.

I play double to a passable extent (I passed Determinator Expert Doubles), so either side doesn't bother me....obviously.

haha determinator on doubles sucks...  Still waiting for somebody to wipe my MR#1 on it

I play both sides on DDR equally well, so it's just machine condition and local preferences.  Like at acme, I play 1P on SN and ITG but usually 2P on extreme.
IIDX left side

P2 all the way, started on 5key Beatmania.  I'm right handed btw.

Also, most of the good Hawaii players (we have a guy here who is pretty much tied for best in the nation at AC IIDX) play 2P, and the good Japanese players, so there. :F

I can play either side equally well. I try to play 2 or 3 sets on one side, then switch, then repeat. This way I keep myself well-balanced.

Of course, if one side sux monkey, then I'll pick the best side.

i always play on the left. it feels like you are so free to do whatever. i dont know it just feels better then the right. i only play on the right when i know that the left side is destroyed

I usually play P2.... but that's because I'm usually playing with Char and he's usually on P1.  That goes for just about every two player game he and I have ever played.  I used to love that clear, purple controller ;-; ...  
...the only game I play alone is DanceManiax at the Avalon, where the left side is fucked up soooooooo.   P2 ^.^
