As title...

Reason I'm asking is because if nobody's going to use this, I'll get rid of the forum. Any Canada events can still go in the Events/Meetups forum if they should happen.

Nooooooooooooooooooo don't delete meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...

Hey, what's up? (Remember me, the guy with the SM cabinet back in the OSC days?)

There's going to be a major event in Vancouver (nice and close!) in mid-August this year, and I would looove for some of you guys to come out for it. I'll post it up more formally once I get some details!

Yep, I do in fact still remember you. Smiley  I saw you came down to Sakuracon and met some of our crew.

Who's running/organizing the Vancouver tournament?

Yes, it was a great time, and some very epic DDR Extreme matches were involved. It was great to meet everyone, and I definitely want to again.

I am one of the co-organizers for the upcoming event. The other organizers are Poutine (he's been around forever, some of the Washington people know him already) and Kaku. (Kaku owns the machine we'll be using)

I say "event" because Canadian conferences have been, since I began them in 2003, more than just a tournament. Typically we rent out a community centre, bring a bunch of games and just sort of hang out and have fun, get to know each other a bit outside of the game. We have little mini-tournament things for fun as well, IIDX, Smash Bros, whatever.

I should note that it's entirely acceptable to just come to the tournament itself as well, though I highly recommend the conference as a whole since it's a whole lot of fun. (And it would be great to get some fresh people coming in!)

The current weekend is looking to be August 14-16, and we're going to do our best to keep costs minimal. (We're looking at booking some rooms in a hotel where we can get a $35 cost per person total for 2 nights, keep in mind this is Canadian $, so even less.) We're hoping to have the conference costs (separate from accomodations) around $20-$25CAD, which will cover a T-shirt, conference hall rental, a pizza party/snacks and a good tournament discount as well.

Things are shaping up fairly well so far, and I feel we'll have enough info to make an official post very soon. I was wondering, actually, would it be acceptable to post in the events forum once I am ready? (Seeing as this would be basically an invite to you guys!)

I would go if that weren't my 21st birthday that I was spending in Las Vegas. Sad I'd love to see some Canadians again. Are Mark/Beau/Fuj still around?

Looks like there won't be a tournament at gk in mid august.  i will see if i can carpool up and get a passport by august.  Any chance of a random caprice tournament on the side, or should i start conditioning for 12's?

I remember reading about some of the Canadian Bemani conferences in the past... they looked pretty cool.

Yeah, you can go ahead any post any and all events in the events forum. Smiley  Anyone who has an event can post in there, even if it's not bemani related, but of interest to us here.

Aw, that's really too bad. I see Mark almost every time I go to Vancouver, Beau about half the time, and The Fuj, well, once in a blue moon, but he's still around in theory. I'm sure if there's a conference he'll make an appearance.

The main tournament is always fairly close to the 'current' competitive format, so this would likely be an ITG 2 with possibly Rebirth tournament. (We haven't nailed down all of the details yet) So, training your 12s wouldn't hurt. Now bear in mind also, that the format we're going with is likely going to be Swiss, which means you will always face someone with the same, or a very similar win/loss record after your initial round, so, unless you're winning a lot of matches, the chances of having 12s pulled against you are at least lower. There is also some interest (from what I've heard) in having a DDR Extreme tournament for fun.

They are indeed a lot of fun, and I will be making a post about this in the events forum once the details have taken a little more shape.

Can an 18yo Oregonian buy alcohol in BC?  If so, Laura I'll buy you $20 worth of your choice of booze and play poker with you if you come to this instead of going to Vegas. Tongue

Drinking age is 19 in BC, regardless of where you are from.

I know because I checked for myself for Anime Evolution.

Okay.  I guess I can't do that then unless this randomly gets delayed to February 2009 or something.  Though it would be kind of moot at that point.  OH WELL. (at least that means I'll have something to do for my 19th birthday.)

You'll have to go to Alberta if you want the drinking age to be 18, sorry guys. Wink (It's not that far!)

I should mention that the conference itself is a dry event, since it's all ages and to some extent we're responsible for people in attendance. (It's also just about what kind of event it is.) Now as far as the time outside of the conference (before or after), well, that's entirely up to you guys.

The conferences are always a great time, and I'm happy to see that there's enthusiasm about it already. We're working on all the details currently, so once the major things are all taken care of, you can expect a post on this!
