- ORIGINAL POST -
In order to combat the divisiveness that seems to exist between the "hardcore ITG" crowd and the "PA" and "just for fun" DDR crowds, I bring the latter group a silly, fun tournament!
WHAT: Be In My Paradise (lol get it) DDR Extreme tournament
WHEN: Saturday, 6/27/09, at noon.
WHERE:
http://www.bowlparadise.net/
/ 12505 Pacific Avenue S., Tacoma, WA
ENTRY FEE: $5.00
RULES:
16 player single elimination - Tennis style matches are longer than your standard matches, so it needs to be single elim if 16 players show up. If only eight or fewer players show up, we can revise this to be eight player double elim very easily.
Tennis style matches - The win condition for a tennis style match is that you need to play AT LEAST three songs against your opponent, and you must be at least two wins ahead of them. Best two out of three, then, is not a win YET, but best three out of four is. Same with best three out of five, six out of ten, etc etc. Due to the tennis style format, this tournament needs to be no more than sixteen players, or it will take all day! Low seed picks either the side they want or first song. The second song will be picked by the next player. At this point, each subsequent song will be chosen by the player who lost the immediately previous song until the match has ended. If a song is a tie, the player who selected longest ago gets next selection.
Failing your own song - If you pick it, you pass it. If you don't, you automatically lose the song regardless of your opponent.
Forfeiture: Players confronted with a particularly challenging song will be allowed to forfeit the song with no effect on the match (unless, by forfeiture, you're giving your opponent the final point they need to win the match.) Once a player forfeits, you HAVE to stick with your song choice and play that song. Because of this, I encourage all players to talk to each other to make any
legitimate
health concerns known. Nobody is an ass for picking HVAM if they didn't know the guy they're playing has a bad knee. "I'm allergic to bad music" is not a health concern, and will probably get you The Reflex or Crash. You are better off including your opponent in the song choice if you want to play a 10.
Asshat rule: There will be no difficulty caps in the traditional sense, HOWEVER I am enforcing a no asshole rule by capping LITERALLY - while all difficulties are permissible in this tournament, if you do something that is
clearly mean spirited
, like pick a 10 against a person you know to have physical limitations (athsma, GERD, has only been playing a week), or exploit factors that have nothing to do with playing ability (picking songs with all freezes when you suspect the other player's side is dropping them, taking note that an arrow might be sticking, and thus playing songs that are all stomps on that arrow), you will be forced to wear a comedically large hat ("the asshat") while you play the rest of the round, so that people know that you were an asshat. If the hat comes off, you lose the song. This is both in the spirit of fun and games, and to make sure that people aren't jerks.
Prizes: The prize pool will be split among the top four players as follows: 1st - 50% 2nd - 25% 3rd - 15% 4th- 10%. Additionally, there will be other fun prizes to be revealed day of!
New players/consolation prizes: Last place player will receive a "lightly used" copy of ITG home from my and my husband's "consolidated" collection to encourage new community members to participate.
Qualifiers: Each player who enters this tournament, as well as any and all spectators who wish to participate, should write a qualifier down on an index card which will be cut in half (the hot dog way) (will be provided) and toss it into the hat at the beginning of the tournament. When it is time to qualify, I will draw a suggestion out of the hat at random, and that will be the qualifier, unless the random choice was clearly a joke (5.1.1. light, MaxX Unlimited, etc etc.) Please refrain from suggesting "joke" songs unless they have some actual merit. If a player wishes, they can enter a song on left, right, or mirror, but please no other mods (sudden, flat, boost, etc etc). If the person whose chart is picked as the qualifier is playing in the tournament, they have to go first - so please write your name on the piece of index card.
Scoring: Perfects = 2, Greats = 1, nothing else = anything. Pad arbitration will take place on a case by case basis IF any pad errors would change the outcome of the match. If you get 2 pad misses and 30 greats, and the guy you played against AAA'd the song, no redo for you.
Modification of rules rule: THESE ARE THE FINAL RULES unless something goes seriously wrong day of.
Feel free to suggest additions/alternatives to the rules. However, if the suggestions lead to drama, they will be respectfully disregarded. I'm all ears otherwise, though!
EDIT: Forgot to address ties in the rules. Whoops.
EDIT 2: Grammar. I'm not telling you WHAT grammar because, as a former English major, I'm embarrassed.
EDIT 3: I NEED PLAYER INPUT. Would you prefer a 10 dollar entry fee and a much larger prize pool, or a 5 dollar entry fee, so you have less to lose?
EDIT 4: Changed the rules in regards to song forfeiture.
EDIT 5: Added Paradise's physical address to the thread.
EDIT 6: Added modification of rules rule.
EDIT 7: Modified qualifiers rule. PLEASE READ!
EDIT 8: Added official "entry fee."
EDIT 9: Modified modification of rules, modified qualifier rules, added scoring. HAVE FUN GUYS!

1) I will be donating $100 to the prize pool for this event.
2) Can we do a PYL tourney?

Something tells me I may be able to come to this. Just a hunch.
Also, challenge event (time and interest permitting)?
EDIT: Suggestion to everyone, if your qual suggestion is obscure (even if it's not), send a link to the stepchart on DDRFreak along with your suggestion so Laura doesn't have to trudge through their site to properly weigh your idea.

OH! So a tournament style Press Your Luck game, not a DDR tournament that somehow involves Press Your Luck... I was wondering about that.
That sounds great, as long as you have the equipment necessary to run it. (I am bringing my netbook but that's it. I'd donate my pop'n controller, but it's attached to a machine.
)
Jesus-Jon also mentioned interest in running an Air Hockey event, so this could turn out to be a giant fun and games day.

Jon as in ME for the air hockey.
That way you all have a chance of winning, since I won't be playing.
I'll play anyone before or after the tournament though.

Best tournament name EVER!
I can probably make it, but I won't be 100% certain until about 2 weeks out from that date.

If a player forfeits, the other player will first be given the option to re-select a song that both players can play.
Wouldn't this defeat the purpose of forcing the Player 1 to pass the ridiculously hard song they selected? If they know that Player 2 forfeits that song, I can't see why Player 1 wouldn't just go to the next hardest song, and continue doing this until Player 2 agrees. I just can't imagine a scenario where player 1 will still choose PSMO to play through it and tire themselves out, even if Player 2 forfeits.
P.S. Do you mind if I put this as an event on beatspace.net?

The reason I put that rule in place is to give potential asshats the benefit of the doubt. For example, people who saw Tony play 6 months ago would assume MaxX Unlimited is valid against him, as he used to pass 12s. Now he has a bum knee and would probably forfeit a 10 because of that, but if you didn't know that, you're not an asshat.
I will modify that rule, however, to state that you can only re-select once. So, if you tell Tony he needs to play MaxX and he says "I forfeit because I have a bad knee," and you say "Fine, then HVAM!" then he can still forfeit and you're stuck with HVAM, and the asshat... but if, instead, you say "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't know! How about I use a different strategy and see how you are at Let The Beat Hit 'Em, since even though slow songs are hard for some people, and thus this is a legit strategy, Let The Beat Hit 'Em will never hurt your knee!" then this is fine. Does that seem acceptable/make sense?
Post away! I'd be HAPPY to get some publicity for this thing.
I do want to reiterate that there's only time for 16 players (although many, many spectators are always welcome), so if this event is getting pimped out in a lot of places, I urge you to send me a "prereg" PM ASAP so you get to play!

Last time I was there, some of the best I've ever played on. It's maintained by Bill, so you know it's good, but it has the added advantage of not being a Bemani hotspot, so nobody really plays on it enough to wear down the sensors. Additionally, it's going to be completely inspected/repaired the morning before the tournament because Bill is fantastic (I was going to say great but that has negative connotations here).
EDIT 2: For the sake of all that is holy, do not EVER assume Let The Beat Hit Em is a legit strategy when playing Tony. I made that mistake last time.

So...does picking The Reflex count as an asshat move?
[edit]
(Is this the same weekend as the other tournament...or have they even set a week for that yet? I can't tell what's going on in that thread without reading the whole damned thing.)

I wouldn't choose MaxX to begin with, but giving someone the asshat after taking the bar down from MaxX to HVAM is pretty terrible. Personally I feel that the difference between the two songs is HUGE. I think that anything over 10 is questionable, but most DDR 9s are passable by many of the players. I don't think an asshat is deserved unless someone intentionally chooses a really hard 9 or 10 step song against someone obviously incapable of passing it.
In all honesty, if this is supposed to be a more "casual" tournament to contrast the ITG one, perhaps you should just say "No 10 step songs unless there's mutual agreement between the two players". That seems very reasonable to me.
The asshat would still be applicable if a player chooses HVAM against someone who can't even beat an 8. But I think that a person should be honest and mention their limitations before beginning their set, or forever hold their peace.

Hahahaha, no. Legitimate strategies that are in the spirit of fair competition are not asshat moves, and include:
1. Figuring out what kind of stepchart your opponent sucks at (not is physically incapable of playing, just sucks at.) For example, some people can AA Max 300 but will get 20+ greats on My Summer Love just because it's slow. Lots of good players suck at "rhythm" charts. Some people HAVE endurance/stamina, but still don't like HVAM.
2. Picking a shitty song nobody wants to hear but that isn't too hard is actually a great strategy - there's nothing unfair about picking "Celebrate" because you know nobody can tolerate that guy's singing enough to practice it. This also goes for stuff like the Reflex.
3. Checking Groovestats is a valid tourney move. "Oh hey, this person's scores on all these 9s are really high, but they seem to be pretty terrible at Sky High... let me play that!"
4. If you're close with somebody and know they will forgive you, there is one ass move I will allow: using information against them. I will give you a personal example because I am not entering. Orion .78 (Original AND Civ Mix) creep me out. The chanting fucking terrifies me. I don't know why, but it really does, and because of this, I will never play either song, and when random gives them to me, I will walk off the stage. My husband knows this and so his tournament song against me is rarely anything but Orion .78.
EDIT: I also want to address the topic of singing - If you are intentionally singing off beat to mess up the players, either as a spectator or a player, you will be warned. Repeat offenses are asshatable. I do encourage the spectators to sing along to "popular" singalong parts, though. The oldskool Paranoia yell ("HEY! HEY HEY! HEY HEY HEY HOOOO!") is welcome, as is the "Duh nuh nuh nuh" in "The Reflex" and "D2R!" at the end of D2R. These are not distracting, or at least, should not be if everyone does them properly (on beat and in unison).

That sounds pretty reasonable, given that it's supposed to be a casual tournament. We have the same rule for ITG tournaments and customs - we've actually had people agree to play a 16 for one of the songs. xD
The other thing you could do is have a light tournament. Sounds silly at first, but it's actually pretty intense! (And, fun for the whole family!)
Laura - Where I come from someone made a freestyle to that song with "interpretive" signs for the singing, which included "Roast beef". The reason I mentioned the Reflex was because I used it against Cynic at Sakura-Con xD

Not to somebody who explicitly states they have a bad knee. HVAM is one of the most "stream" heavy songs in the game, and it's fast. This is about function of song choice, not how the two charts compare in general.
But if you really think this will be a problem, I'd prefer to modify the rule to err on the side of protecting the players, so if you think it's better, I'll remove the option to change your song selection.

I actually suggested this in the other thread. It's surprisingly hard!!
If everybody wants 10s to be a "both players agree" thing, I can make 10s a "both players agree" thing. The forfeiture rules still need to apply, though, for other reasons. Sometimes there's a legit reason to forfeit a song even if the person picking it isn't being a jerk. One time I ended up becoming ill mid-tournament and needed to forfeit any song I was given to go throw up, but I didn't want to leave the tournament, just lose the match so I could play later rounds in the loser's bracket after I felt better.
