April 12, 2010, 11:21:29 AM - ORIGINAL POST -

All right, you all knew it was coming, and it's coming fast. Laura Chick, PNWBemani, and Pink Gorilla will be hosting an old school tournament on DDR 4th Mix +. I don't have a firm time yet, but this thread will be updated with that information by tomorrow.

Format: This tournament is going to be pay-as-you-go like the last one was. It will be double elimination according to standard bracketing. In addition to paying for your games, there will be a $1 entry fee (like last time.) I have thought about it a bit and I am *not* going to force flat, as I think that it would only serve to give players who are already more skilled a leg-up.

Qualifier: I am going to make a list of every 7 foot song (Paramount!) playable on a 4th Mix + machine and pipe it into a randomizer. This way, nobody will know what the qualifier will be until qualifying starts, including me.

Rounds: High seed gets choice of side selection or song order selection. If each player wins a song, the third song will be a tiebreaker determined by random. Random songs may not be vetoed, no matter how much they suck to play and/or listen to. That's part of the fun!

Scoring: +2 for a Perfect, +1 for a Great. Ties will be broken by straight number of perfects.

Other: This IS a tech tournament, but it's also supposed to be more fun than serious, so feel free to sing along to hilarious oldschool songs, freestyle while attempting to PA, etc etc. No Matrix Walking or you will be ejected in the most embarrassing and hilarious way possible.

IMPORTANT: I know that "No Bar" is hard for some of us because it's almost a reflex at this point, so you get one freebee "accident" where we'll just tell you to get off the bar, mock you, etc. The second time you grab for the bar, you will be DISQUALIFIED, so please be careful!

Any questions? Comments? Concerns? And also, if this doesn't turn out to be an Administrative nightmare, does anybody have a problem with me breaking my own rule and entering my own tournament? The ruleset is completely standard and the qualifier will be completely random.

Edit: Start time will be 2:00 PM. Smiley

Who's ruling for pad misses should they come up?

I have no problems with you entering. The ruleset is good and simple, and shouldn't need much supervising.

Dang, probably can't make it. I got my parents in town for the week and I doubt I can spare half a day.

I vote you hook up a car battery to the bars. This will ensure no one will grab it more than once. =D

1. Good point with regard to pad misses. On the off-chance that these do affect score (these matches aren't going to be nearly as close as things have been in the past,) I think we will probably just throw the song out and do a new one. I really don't think it's ever going to come up except in the wake of huge pad errors anyway.

Kevin (and everybody else): I mentioned above that I don't have a time yet. I need to get into contact with Bobby a bit more before I finalize. It will be afternoon for sure, though. Smiley

Suko: As funny as that is... somebody actually attached a neon transformer to a metal chair at my old office one. Ambulances were called. It was a biiig scene. :>

Laura this is an old school tournament.
I have no problem with you joining even though your running it.
Besides it's 4TH MIX +

why wouldn't you want to join? haha

I was really looking forward to this tournament too. Maybe you can try to pull off another one, or a DDR Max or Extreme tournament sometime later this summer.

If this goes well, there will definitely be more. Smiley

Thanks for being cool with me being all unprofessional this time around. I just love 4th+ so much and would be so sad watching you all play without joining in.

I really hope I can make it to this  Huh
Always prefer playing no-bar anyway.

I'm going to go on a limb and say that even if there were pad misses, there will be zero matches affected by it.

By the way I'm already there waiting for the tournament to start.

They close in 40 minutes, so you'd best be grabbing a tent to sleep in or something. Grin

The only way pad errors could affect matches is if one sensor literally stops working. This HAS actually happened before. As far as intermittent pad errors go... yeah. It's just not going to be that big of a deal, especially considering the way this is scored - a miss is worth exactly one point less than a great.

just show up at opening and plan to be there until closing

......

I say it jokingly but that's kinda how tournaments at IZ worked, come to think of it.  I mean they had a time set (very close to opening), but it ran through and past closing.  Multiple days.  Ahh the days of huge tournaments...

That's because we tended to cram in however much tourney we could fit into the day.  And usually guessed wrong, so ran late.  I think Challenge Mode went on until 2am or so one time... I remember Magic Mike asleep in the ball pit.  Smiley

Could one of you do me a huge favor at PG tomorrow? Could you check their "bargain bin" for me and see if there're any used/old SNES controllers for dirt cheap? I bought some last time I was there and was wondering if they've gotten any more since then.

Just have Null call my cell while you're there if you see any. Much appreciated.

P.S. I would ask ddrcoder/Null to do this for me, but he tends to be extremely forgetful of such requests.

Suko, was there tonight but didn't see any SNES controllers in there.

They have had a sign out front that said the Tournament starts at 1pm tomorrow... so random people might show up then, if any random people are going.

Congratulations to JAMES! (manyminimoos) for winning a PG gift card, stuffed Pink Godzilla and poster (and price entry fees).

9 entrants, fun times by all! Kevin (Keby) came back from the loser's bracket to almost beat James in the finals, but couldn't prevail. It was a Kaufman vs Kaufman final. Smiley

Anyway, glad to see people there today, and I had a great time!
