- ORIGINAL POST -
What?
A pay-your-way, somewhat informal tournament to celebrate the opening of the Pink Gorilla arcade and facilitate the acquisition of more Bemani by the operator of said arcade's machines, Bobby Conover!
When?
Saturday, 2/27/10, at 1 o clock PM.
Where?
Pink Gorilla in the U-District - specifically, on University Way ("The Ave") and 45th.
Rules
Although the tournament officially starts at 1 PM, I will be available from about 12:10 if people want to stagger in early and get qualifying out of the way. Because players are paying for their own games, I suggest warming up with two songs and then playing the qualifier, which will be announced day-of, as the third song in your set. This tournament will be organized according to standard bracketing. Whether the event is double elimination or single elimination will be decided the day of, depending on how many participants show up. All players will need to pay for their own games, as part of the purpose of this tournament is to show the "powers that be" that Bemani games are big earners!
There will be a one dollar entry fee, in addition to paying for your own games. This is so that the winner of this tournament gets SOMETHING. 100% of your one dollar entry fees will go to the winner.
EDIT: I have just been informed that
PG is going to throw in a 25 dollar gift certificate for the winner
! They're giving us prizes, guys. This is GOOD.
This tournament will follow the "best two out of three" format. The higher seed will be given their choice of EITHER picking which side they want, or picking whether their song selection will be first or second. If the match is not decided by the second song, a third song will be picked at random. If no third song is needed, both players are still entitled to finish playing their set, because they paid for it. Because SN2 machine score is calculated based on straight calculation of marvelouses, perfects, and greats, we will be deciding the winners of matches by machine score.
Any song on Heavy/Oni OR rated as 7 feet or higher may be played at any time in this tournament. However, we are posting a flyer on the SN2 machine itself, so there may be some walk-ins of various skill levels - please do not pick the hardest songs in the game against them. The point is to encourage the growth of this arcade AND the community around it.
Water and soda will be provided by me, as Pink Gorilla doesn't have a drinking fountain or vending machine. If you have a specific request, please feel free to let me know.
If you have any questions/comments/concerns, please post them here. Thanks, guys!
Edit: Oh yeah - if there isn't a large turnout, I may just break my first rule of tournament organization and enter myself. This is because I know that I'm not actually capable of winning any songs or matches, so it really probably isn't a big deal.
Edit 2: Additional prizes!
Edit 3: I forgot about pad arbitration! If a player feels that they received a "boo" or "miss" due to sensor defect, I will do the math and determine if receiving a "perfect" would have made the outcome of the match different - I will NOT assume that your "boo" or "miss" would have been a "marvelous," because the timing window is so tight that such a thing is not a safe assumption. If getting a "perfect" instead of a pad error would make you the winner of the song, you will be declared the winner. Otherwise, you won't. If pad misses happen ENOUGH, we will open the machine up and rotate the sensors. However, keep in mind that this tournament costs one dollar to enter.
Any complaints along the lines of "Well, that one miss messed me up and that made me get 5 greats because I was distracted" will be cheerfully ignored.

Everything was fine with me. There were a few hickups, but I kind of like having the pay-as-you-play method vs fixed entry fee. I also feel that the pay-as-you-play would be appealing to normal people (i.e. people not certain they'll get past the first round). This allows them to give it a shot without risking $5 on an extremely unlikely shot at 1st place.
It seems that the majority of us weren't there for the prize money. We were there to have a good time and enjoy ourselves. I think it's important to remember that these events are supposed to be about having a good time and less about the rewards. Lets not make it all about the money by incorporating high entry fees and complex rules. These easy-going , but enjoyable events are what I like.
Edit: We should've had a gag prize for 2nd place, like a bag of Cheetos or a lame plushie or something. At least it'd make the player feel like they got something for coming so far.

I actually have something WORSE than that.
A midi-based TV plug in dance game (the one I bought from PG for $2.50). It's BAD! lol

This was what the tournaments was supposed to be, and it worked. I agree with Suko, why try to change it and make it more complicated? Keep those for a different tournament, but not the casual ones at PG.

Best moment: Watching two competitors (I forget which two) go to Random for their third song, leave their difficulties on Challenge (Tony double-checked two or three times to make sure that's what they wanted), set their speed mods to 2x...and getting FELM.
Here's the video of that:
3rd song of SEB vs NSXX
Hard to keep the camera steady while laughing
Still planning to upload most of the videos that I took that day, while still keeping them listed in the order that the matches took place.
-edit-
Done uploading.
