- ORIGINAL POST -
What?
A pay-your-way, somewhat informal tournament to celebrate the opening of the Pink Gorilla arcade and facilitate the acquisition of more Bemani by the operator of said arcade's machines, Bobby Conover!
When?
Saturday, 2/27/10, at 1 o clock PM.
Where?
Pink Gorilla in the U-District - specifically, on University Way ("The Ave") and 45th.
Rules
Although the tournament officially starts at 1 PM, I will be available from about 12:10 if people want to stagger in early and get qualifying out of the way. Because players are paying for their own games, I suggest warming up with two songs and then playing the qualifier, which will be announced day-of, as the third song in your set. This tournament will be organized according to standard bracketing. Whether the event is double elimination or single elimination will be decided the day of, depending on how many participants show up. All players will need to pay for their own games, as part of the purpose of this tournament is to show the "powers that be" that Bemani games are big earners!
There will be a one dollar entry fee, in addition to paying for your own games. This is so that the winner of this tournament gets SOMETHING. 100% of your one dollar entry fees will go to the winner.
EDIT: I have just been informed that
PG is going to throw in a 25 dollar gift certificate for the winner
! They're giving us prizes, guys. This is GOOD.
This tournament will follow the "best two out of three" format. The higher seed will be given their choice of EITHER picking which side they want, or picking whether their song selection will be first or second. If the match is not decided by the second song, a third song will be picked at random. If no third song is needed, both players are still entitled to finish playing their set, because they paid for it. Because SN2 machine score is calculated based on straight calculation of marvelouses, perfects, and greats, we will be deciding the winners of matches by machine score.
Any song on Heavy/Oni OR rated as 7 feet or higher may be played at any time in this tournament. However, we are posting a flyer on the SN2 machine itself, so there may be some walk-ins of various skill levels - please do not pick the hardest songs in the game against them. The point is to encourage the growth of this arcade AND the community around it.
Water and soda will be provided by me, as Pink Gorilla doesn't have a drinking fountain or vending machine. If you have a specific request, please feel free to let me know.
If you have any questions/comments/concerns, please post them here. Thanks, guys!
Edit: Oh yeah - if there isn't a large turnout, I may just break my first rule of tournament organization and enter myself. This is because I know that I'm not actually capable of winning any songs or matches, so it really probably isn't a big deal.
Edit 2: Additional prizes!
Edit 3: I forgot about pad arbitration! If a player feels that they received a "boo" or "miss" due to sensor defect, I will do the math and determine if receiving a "perfect" would have made the outcome of the match different - I will NOT assume that your "boo" or "miss" would have been a "marvelous," because the timing window is so tight that such a thing is not a safe assumption. If getting a "perfect" instead of a pad error would make you the winner of the song, you will be declared the winner. Otherwise, you won't. If pad misses happen ENOUGH, we will open the machine up and rotate the sensors. However, keep in mind that this tournament costs one dollar to enter.
Any complaints along the lines of "Well, that one miss messed me up and that made me get 5 greats because I was distracted" will be cheerfully ignored.

Also, there's a bubble tea/bakery place next door with restrooms and food/drink.

So it'd be a given that we better have money for this. Also, do you have a solution for those that might be financially irresponsible. Just asking, because it's always good to have a backup. I'll be fine of course.

Errr... in what capacity?
If you're talking about the purchase of beverages, those are free - I am donating them.
If you're talking about the one dollar entry fee and the cost of playing your games, it is doubtful that anyone will have to play more than 5 sets or so - so you're looking at 5-10 dollars, no more than most people spend on a normal day at the arcade. I've never encountered a problem with people going to an arcade completely empty handed before, so that's not a concern.

Yeah, I mean... I guess at the most basic level, if you can't pay, you can't play, but I am really trying to make this tournament even LESS expensive than your standard 10 dollar entry fee tournament, and nobody's ever had a problem with that. Dance Dance Party Party had two events, each with 15 dollar entry fees and nobody even seemed to have difficulty affording that. I guess I have a hard time seeing 6-7 dollars as a problem for anyone in this community.

I may show up for this. It depends on whether I can improve my SN2 game by Saturday. The one time I played PG's SN2, I didn't do well at all, and that was disconcerting.

Keep in mind, too, that most people have not played much SN2, so you'll be in the majority. Possibly of note: Tony's entering, and he's actually never played SN2 as far as I know. Like, ever.

Just got this coming Saturday off work-wise, which I'm happy about. If I do enter the tournament, I know I'd just be a stepping stone for others to qualify for later rounds more easily, heh, but I guess I'll try the qualifier.
I am planning to bring my new little Kodak video camera to get some footage of at least the final/semi-final matches for Youtube. Would that be okay?

Yeah, that'd be great! I'm bringing my camera, but my pictures and videos typically look like they were taken on a roller coaster, so anyone else who wants to be involved in media coverage for this event would be fantastic!
As previously stated, I'm announcing the qualifier day-of. What I will say is that the song will not be extraordinarily difficult (probably an 8,) and it will not be new to SN2 - this is so that players who haven't gotten a chance to play on the new machine won't have a sizable disadvantage to those who have in seeding.

I may try to make it. I've never played SN2, but I played a lot back in the Extreme days.

Sweet! It'd be nice to meet a new face!
And don't worry - like I said, most of us have very limited experience with SN2 (the first machine in Washington was this one, which arrived a little over a week ago) and are still figuring out the timing; additionally, while SN2 charts are playable and even encouraged in the actual tournament, the qualifier song used for seeding will NOT be a song that's new to SN2. It will actually most likely be from Extreme or earlier.

I'll show up just to spectate, since I haven't been to any event of this nature for a couple years now, but my skills are pretty bad at this point

Very likely I'll stop by, rusty though and mostly going just to meet new people and check out Pink Gorilla for the first time
. I played Tony once in an SC DDR tournament 2 years ago, but other than that...yeah.

I hate to nitpick, but I'm trying to figure out who you are (I'm Tony's wife,) and this doesn't make sense, because SC 2008 (2 years ago) was the only year we didn't go.

That's too bad!
X-posted from Facebook: I need a volunteer who's coming but not entering to help me administrate, now that this tournament is getting kind of big. Basically, I just need you to take a clipboard and write down people's scores during qualifying, and watch people's feet when they play so that we can properly arbitrate for pad errors.

I don't mind helping with adminstrative work like gathering names, etc. I doubt that could be considered a conflict of interest...You'd still be adjucating any problems.
Btw, have you decided if this is to be single or dbl elimination? If there's 10+ people, I'd prefer single elim.
Also, I'll be bringing my mini box fan that works awesome for one side of the machine, but I suggest someone else brings another fan of some sorts because I think it gets really hot in that place, and I'm sure it'll be even hotter with a decent amount of people there.

At this point, it is safe to say that it will be single, BUT, if on the day of the tournament ten or fewer players have shown up to enter, it will be double. That's my cutoff.
Also, I edited the rules to deal with pad arbitration.

Oh, sorry I meant '07 (or it may have been '06? Ay...). It was a while ago, and I only remember because I got an ITG pad (Tony got the ITG game)...maybe he can remember. We played Max 300 and Butterfly. I'm Solomon (hi hi)

Here comes critical Bressler...
I have a sort of a gripe with giving the win due to pad arbitration. I have always been of the opinion that if a pad error caused a match's momentum to shift, the song should be:
1) Thrown out and replayed
2) Thrown out, and if the match ends 1-1 or 2-2, Total perfect (or marv) percent of the songs should break the tie
The reason for this being that someone could actually misstep, and then blame it on the pad. That miss could give them a win they don't really deserve due to a player screwup and not a machine one.

Normally I'd agree with you, but for such a "low key" tournament, I think the way Laura has it is fine.
In all seriousness, the more "hard core and legit" you make this tournament, the more you'll probably just confuse some of the more casual people that're coming to play and have fun. Lets treat this thing like a tournament from 2004 and not stress over these things. I'm sure we'll all have a good time regardless.
