- ORIGINAL POST -
What?
A pay-your-way, somewhat informal tournament to celebrate the opening of the Pink Gorilla arcade and facilitate the acquisition of more Bemani by the operator of said arcade's machines, Bobby Conover!
When?
Saturday, 2/27/10, at 1 o clock PM.
Where?
Pink Gorilla in the U-District - specifically, on University Way ("The Ave") and 45th.
Rules
Although the tournament officially starts at 1 PM, I will be available from about 12:10 if people want to stagger in early and get qualifying out of the way. Because players are paying for their own games, I suggest warming up with two songs and then playing the qualifier, which will be announced day-of, as the third song in your set. This tournament will be organized according to standard bracketing. Whether the event is double elimination or single elimination will be decided the day of, depending on how many participants show up. All players will need to pay for their own games, as part of the purpose of this tournament is to show the "powers that be" that Bemani games are big earners!
There will be a one dollar entry fee, in addition to paying for your own games. This is so that the winner of this tournament gets SOMETHING. 100% of your one dollar entry fees will go to the winner.
EDIT: I have just been informed that
PG is going to throw in a 25 dollar gift certificate for the winner
! They're giving us prizes, guys. This is GOOD.
This tournament will follow the "best two out of three" format. The higher seed will be given their choice of EITHER picking which side they want, or picking whether their song selection will be first or second. If the match is not decided by the second song, a third song will be picked at random. If no third song is needed, both players are still entitled to finish playing their set, because they paid for it. Because SN2 machine score is calculated based on straight calculation of marvelouses, perfects, and greats, we will be deciding the winners of matches by machine score.
Any song on Heavy/Oni OR rated as 7 feet or higher may be played at any time in this tournament. However, we are posting a flyer on the SN2 machine itself, so there may be some walk-ins of various skill levels - please do not pick the hardest songs in the game against them. The point is to encourage the growth of this arcade AND the community around it.
Water and soda will be provided by me, as Pink Gorilla doesn't have a drinking fountain or vending machine. If you have a specific request, please feel free to let me know.
If you have any questions/comments/concerns, please post them here. Thanks, guys!
Edit: Oh yeah - if there isn't a large turnout, I may just break my first rule of tournament organization and enter myself. This is because I know that I'm not actually capable of winning any songs or matches, so it really probably isn't a big deal.
Edit 2: Additional prizes!
Edit 3: I forgot about pad arbitration! If a player feels that they received a "boo" or "miss" due to sensor defect, I will do the math and determine if receiving a "perfect" would have made the outcome of the match different - I will NOT assume that your "boo" or "miss" would have been a "marvelous," because the timing window is so tight that such a thing is not a safe assumption. If getting a "perfect" instead of a pad error would make you the winner of the song, you will be declared the winner. Otherwise, you won't. If pad misses happen ENOUGH, we will open the machine up and rotate the sensors. However, keep in mind that this tournament costs one dollar to enter.
Any complaints along the lines of "Well, that one miss messed me up and that made me get 5 greats because I was distracted" will be cheerfully ignored.

Bressler> The reason I'm assuming perfects is that I'm going to be WATCHING people's feet to make sure they're NOT misstepping. It's pretty clear when somebody's making a bullshit call, and most players won't let other players get away with it. It's very important to the structure of this tournament that no matches end in ties after three songs, because the machine is not on free play/event mode, so players will have to pay more to keep playing, and we will have to wait for them to finish three songs, as opposed to just the one it takes to resolve the match.

Which is why I suggested still throwing the song out and making a tie break overall perfect percentage of the other two songs played should the match go 1-1. Giving a win due to machine error isn't fair to the other player, especially when you don't know for sure what the timing of the correct step was. What if it was a great and they would have ended up losing by 1 DP?
I understand this is a 'casual' event, but casual or not, you have to make a fair ruleset. I'm not trying to be a dick, I am just stating my case.

In the case this small chance scenario comes up, I'm sure it'll be handled fairly, with or without your rule.

I can't tell if you are being hostile or not. If you are, Jon, There's no need to be, as I'm not trying to be hostile in any way, I am just pointing out potential scenarios.
This is close to con; I'll see if I can't finagle something from the con to give away as a prize. might be a little late as your event is in two days, but again, I'll see what I can finagle.

Jon (Bressler) - I hadn't actually seen the part where you recalculated ties based on the two songs that are played. I do like that idea - the only concern is the fact that since this machine is NOT on freeplay, writing down both players' scores, marvs, perfects, and greats before the timer runs out is going to be a huge challenge, even with two people (which we don't have as of yet - so far, I'm the only person running it.)
In the past, we have had several tournaments with rules where pad errors were recalculated, and it has worked well (and was considered fair by all players.) I do really appreciate the input from a seasoned organizer, but please keep in mind that everybody will be watching, and the likelihood of somebody lying about a pad error AND nobody calling bullshit is about the same as the likelihood that I would seed first if I entered my own tournament - yes, it would be unfair and make the whole tournament suck, but it's just not going to happen.
BTW, I just realized that since I'm typing this on Tony's computer (my laptop won't turn on until I charge my battery a bit) I am probably posting as ancsik. This is Laura.

I now see my chances of winning to be 1 in 99 (instead of 100) now o.o;
Bad joke, and I'm sorry we'll be out another great player.. Competitions are coolest when you pit the best against the best..at their best.

Dontcha worry...Keby will be there, and he will be kicking arse.
I'm hoping those of us top-tier players will keep this thing casual. I want to have a good time, regardless of what I place, and meet some new people.
I'm hoping I get the chance to play Orion.78 with Null or Rain so that we can do our Peg Leg Bar Hop.

That was an interesting story indeed regarding the ramen
Who knew instant lunches could cause such misfortune.
Anywho...
Congrads to Keby as well, for taking home the win.
Final song results
I will likely copy/load a portion of the matches onto my Youtube within the next couple days. If there are any special requests, let me know. I got videos of
most
but not all.

Everyone who has videos and pics, please post them in this thread. I really would like to watch some of the matches I had with some of you and it was great to meet some of you new players.
I guess in the end I'm glad it was dbl elimination. It gave me a chance to improve from my terrible first set...17g on Frozen Ray, GAH!
Good tournament everyone, I hope to see you all again soon.

Here's the rundown!
14 people entered - many more showed up to play and spectate. It ran pretty smoothly, with only a couple of very brief stalls to open up the pads. Everybody decided that they didn't mind it running long, so we did double elim - this proved to be a good thing, as Suko, who Tony knocked out way at the beginning, came back to take 3rd. Keby was the winner, and Angelo surprised the heck out of everyone by coming in second, even though most people here don't know who he is. :O
Keby won some sweet prizes - 14 bucks, a poster, a plushie, and a 25 dollar Pink Gorilla gift certificate.
Stay tuned - I think we're going to be doing this pretty frequently.

Hey everyone -
This is Angelo, in case you don't remember my handle, but yeah I used to play a lot and have kind of been getting into playing again recently since Gameworks decided to fix up their extreme machine to a playable condition.
Anyways, here's a picture I took of the final bracket if anyone is interested:

Congrats to Keby, who beat me fair and square because I am not very good at hard songs anymore and have no stamina

It was definitely a huge success. I'm really stoked, and Rob and Gabe (who work at PG) seemed very happy with these results - it seems like we're going to have a continued relationship with regard to tournaments happening somewhat often.
Something that was brought up that I'm going to talk to them about is the fact that nobody seems to have a problem paying for using the machine, but everybody kind of hated the lack of event mode for other reasons - a couple of people selected Beginner by accident, and it forced their round to go long enough that they had to pay more money, play one song, and stall the tournament for two more songs. An idea was to charge a 10 dollar entry fee for these events, and give PG a significant cut of THAT, instead of putting quarters in the machine. This accomplishes the same thing as paying for games, but with much less red tape.
BTW, if anybody has any pictures, I'd love to see them!

If I am counting right, you have around 30 matches there. This would make $60 for games.
This means you would have $80 for the prize pool, which is about 57% of the funding, assuming you have 14 entrants again. Perhaps going in 60-40 with them would be better, they might take a small loss on the machine revenue, but people who see a packed store might be more willing to shop there, so I would think they could take that slight loss.
Also, I am glad to hear this was a success. Maybe Digital Storm Rebirth could happen here in the summer? I am devising challenges right now....

Best moment: Watching two competitors (I forget which two) go to Random for their third song, leave their difficulties on Challenge (Tony double-checked two or three times to make sure that's what they wanted), set their speed mods to 2x...and getting FELM.
Additionally, I think my girlfriend is now addicted to PopN.

One thing to note is that the prize pool doesn't just consist of money- PG gives away swagger and gift certificates. Because of this, the players getting less back in the form of entry fees is slightly more okay. I like your idea though! I'll have to propose all kinds of different ways to do this. I think that once the week ends and they realize how much non-Supernova2 income this tournament generated (it was PACKED the whole time) they will be very excited.
A challenge touney would be super fun!
Edit> Also, Thunderbird, that's GREAT. I somehow missed that; it may have been the matches that I had Tony oversee while I was running across the street to get an energy drink. My favorite was Tony VS Keby on Ska Ska Number 3 - they each had 3 greats, and Keby beat Tony by 6 Marvelouses.

The tournament was so fun. Good job to everyone who entered! It was a lot of fun!
Honestly this tournament go have gone so many ways. I loved all the close matches I had. I love it when you just barely win or lose to somebody, that's always the best when it's so close.

Now that I think about it, there's another issue with the whole lack of Event Mode and the tournament structure of breaking a tie with Random...I saw a good amount of extra stages occurring because of that (since Random qualifies one for extra stage). I'm not sure how much this extended the tournament by, but there was at least one occurrence of Random being chosen for the extra stage...which ended up going to the encore because of that.

Yeah, this was the last one before you came back (as I remember a few people asking for clarification on how to judge the results due to both players failing the song).
