- ORIGINAL POST -
IT'S CAME BACK
BEWARE IT AND PREPARE IT
S.P.E.R.G.I.N. 2
Brought to you by Laura (Laura) and Ben (sfxazure)
With help from Scott (Suko)
4 August 2012
Entry Fee: $5.00 if you preregister, $10.00 at the door.
Important: The tournament pack is now available for download
here
.
For those of you unawares, Ben and I ran
a not-so-serious tournament last summer called S.P.E.R.G.I.N.
, which was a traditional double-elimination tournament with a pack made entirely of charts submitted by entrants. It was awesome and fun, and we can't wait to do it again! Once again, we need YOUR help to make it happen!
Changes from S.P.E.R.G.I.N.:
- Unlike S.P.E.R.G.I.N., this tournament will NOT be run at ACME. Rather, Scott (Suko) has graciously offered to allow us use of his garage and private machine. In order to ensure he does not regret this decision, we will not post his address publicly on the internet. If you need it, please PM one of the organizers.
Notable things that
haven’t changed
:
- Songs must still be playable in a public space like ACME. Although the tournament will be played in a private venue, most entrants only have access to a public machine for practice.
- Rules for passing the song you pick have not changed. That is,
“you pick it, you pass it” does not apply
.
Phase One: Pre-registration and Stepchart Submission
Due Date: 1 July, 2012
Preregistration will begin immediately and will run until the end of Phase One. Attendees who preregister will pay a discounted rate ($5.00 instead of $10.00.) Preregistration will be handled through PMs to Ben/sfxazure, who will accept payment through Amazon Payments, PayPal, or in person. To keep things organized, please use the title “SPERGIN Preregistration” for your PM.
You will have from today until July 1st to submit up to four songs (one stepchart each) to be included in the tournament pack. Please use this submission form, and make sure to identify yourself by name/forum name somewhere in the file. We encourage you to create and submit new stepcharts, but any are fine as long as you had a hand in their creation. Submitted songs/stepcharts will be rejected if they do not conform to the following rules:
1. The chart must be to a song no longer than three minutes and thirty seconds (3:30) in length. There are many reasons for this, including but not limited to the fact that we have to keep the tournament moving and the fact that 3:30 is ACME's cutoff for a “long song.” We don’t want people to have to pay more to practice some charts than others.
2. Songs must be appropriate for play in public venues such as ACME Bowl. Please avoid profanity or find some way to work around it (clean versions, comedic censoring, etc.) Any content deemed inappropriate for a public venue will be rejected.
3. Songs must be ITG Arcade Ready. Details for preparing your songs can be found here. If your song is over 2 minutes, DO NOT .OGG PATCH IT. Also, it is recommended that you test your file on Acme’s ITG machine before submitting it, as different machines have different syncing.
4. Stepcharts must have at least 50 hittable arrows. We are all for exploring a wide range of difficulties, but please no “Beginner mode.” While there may be ways to make an interesting chart with under 50 steps, it would increase the likelihood of ties and slow the tournament down.
We also reserve the right to reject a stepfile for unusual reasons, such as the file crashing StepMania.
Note: If a song is rejected for any reason, you may submit a replacement; cleaned-up versions of rejected submissions can be submitted, as well as completely different songs/charts. After a song has been accepted for the pack, it is finalized and can not be replaced or modified.
As soon as a stepchart is accepted into the pack, it will be made available for download at the bottom of this post. This is because Ben and I will be entering the tournament ourselves, and we don’t want to gain an unfair advantage by viewing songs before they are released publicly.
By submitting charts to the tournament pack, you agree to enter the tournament. While people who have not submitted stepcharts may enter, those of you who submit stepcharts must enter. Because of this, we will not begin to evaluate stepcharts from any given entrant before they have preregistered for the tournament; consider your entry fee a form of collateral.
Phase Two: Practice
During this period of time, the organizers will combine your charts into a pack. If the organizers feel that there are not enough new stepcharts on which to run a tournament, we will find some quick hack to fix this issue. This should take about a week. After this, the pack will be released and installed on the ACME machine, so that you may practice these charts at your leisure. This should take about a month.
Phase Three: TOURNAMENT!
4 August 2012, 12:30 PM, Suko's place
Please note: You will see the phrase “Because this is not intended to be a serious tournament...” many times. This is because this is not intended to be a serious tournament, and is supposed to be for fun! Please do not get too caught up in minor details.
This will be a double elimination event with room for up to 32 entrants. Only songs from the S.P.E.R.G.I.N.2. pack will be playable in this tournament.
Seeding: Because this is not intended to be a serious tournament, seeding will be random. If you complain about this, we will make fun of you on the internet.
Matches: High seed gets first choice of machine side or pick order. The other choice goes to low seed. Each player will then pick one song of their choice to play against the other player. Whoever gets the highest percentage (as calculated by the machine) on a given song wins that song. (You know how this works by now.) If both players are tied at the end of two songs, a third song will be chosen from the S.P.E.R.G.I.N.2. pack by way of the ITG machine’s “random” function. If both players are still tied, another random tiebreaker will be chosen until the tie is broken.
Song Selection: Each player may only use a song as their “pick” once over the course of the tournament. Because this is not intended to be a serious tournament, either player may fail any song throughout all tournament rounds with no additional penalty - once you fail, your percentage is “locked” as your score.
Level Caps: Because this is not intended to be a serious tournament, there will be no level caps. Any chart may be picked at any time in the tournament, regardless of difficulty (or opponent, since seeing is random.)
Prizes: Once preregistration ends and we have a better idea of how many entrants we will have, we will determine a prize structure based on 100% of the entry fees.
Please note that although the “IN” in “S.P.E.R.G.I.N.2.” does stand for “In the Northwest,” out of state players are still more than welcome to participate and submit stepcharts.

Heya Cameron, good to see you made it on the forums! If you wanted to still go to this you might just consider commuting rather than driving; Seattle has really good public transit and, for instance, there is a reasonably priced train that runs from Portland (where I thought you said you were from?) to Seattle pretty much daily. I'm sure if you asked you could find someone to shelter you for the eve'. Anyway good to have you on here!
Oh also if you still have that Dynamite Rave freestyle (and maybe any other good vids you might have taken there!) throw it up on the forums (or facebook, which there are links on the left <----), these guys need to know how to
really
play dance games!
hehe...

Hi Cameron! Nice to see you on here!
S.P.E.R.G.I.N.2 does unfortunately only accept singles charts. This is because of necessity: The tournament itself is a standard double-elimination tournament, meaning that all rounds will be played against other players. Doing vs. rounds with one machine means that if a doubles chart is in the pack and selected, both players would have to play it separately, doubling (har har) the amount of time the round takes. Unfortunately, we just don't have time for this.
It would be great to have you at the tournament should you change your mind, though!

So, in an effort to have my computer match sync (specifically global offset) of an ITG dedicate (specifically the -0.015 that Scott mentioned is the setting the cool kids are using nowadays), I have absolutely determined that my laptop's global offset should not be set -0.015. Not to surprising as I'm essentially "typing" rhythms here as opposed to stomping and the hardware is totally different.
In that case, because sync is EXTREMELY important to me (since I cannot play off sync for the life of me), what would you guys say is one of the best synced songs in ITG? I can base my global offset off of that so that my Spergin submissions will actually be synced pretty well.

Just so you're clear, this isn't an offset. It's a fudge factor added or subtracted to the timing window to make it larger or smaller. Hence, it makes it easier or more difficult to get Fantastics.
In response to your other question; My first quads were Cryosleep and Renaissance. I think Renaissance is a tad bit late though. Cryosleep (IMO) is dead on. However, keep in mind that some people's idea of dead on may be earlier or later than others.
Oh, Utopia and Infection on hard is another one I think is pretty accurate.

ITG's consideration of perfect timing nowadays is about the same timing as Cryosleep, as Suko said. That is to say, *most* charts nowadays are synced to about where this is, though this is, in my perception just barely on the early side of perfectly on time, much like Summer Rain. Birdie, The Game, and Spacy Crazy Girl I have quadded and have about the same timing as well. So just take one (or all, and take the average) of these songs, sync it on your computer to figure out the offset, sync the song in question, and then change the offset by this amount. At least that's always worked for me. Hope this makes sense.

I have to chyme in on this because it's saved me when making charts.
This guide is amazing. Read it and love it.

tl:dr
Set your global offset to -0.012 on whatever you're using (stepmania or OITG). It will make current charts you have off sync with your keyboard, but sync with this because you're making steps for the arcade, not for your computer.

Whoah, discussion is happening in here now!
I agree with Gerrak that Summer Rain feels extremely close to if not perfectly on. That's the chart I use to warm up my timing.

And this is EXACTLY what I was looking for! Thanks a ton! My global offset was at -0.015 (admittedly pretty close), but I changed it to -0.012 after reading this. Due to my specific hardware, I have to resync a lot of the songs on my version, but it's good to know now that they'll be dead on.

Actually, now I'm really unsure I'm entering at all - The next Seattle Pinball League tournament is on the same day, and I'm honestly more into that than music games right now.

SUP BROS. Remember, the cutoff for preregistration is june 1st! Let's get some submissions going! When you're set on submitting a song, you can submit it via upload to mediafire (we had some trouble with the official upload site last time, so however you get it to us is fine as long as you do get it to us).
Suko and Tyrgannus, feel free to submit the charts you've already unofficially released.
I've set up a site for song downloads here along with the first official upload, Dual Strikers:
http://bkirz-spergin-2.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com/.
As more charts are submitted and approved, they'll appear on that site. Get charting, guys!

I was going to ask if this is till in the works (with Laura leaving and all). I did forget that the deadline is coming up that fast. That means I really gotta finish up a chart I have before it gets too late.

The good news is I am only maybe leaving.
The better news is that I am definitely not leaving before the end of summer; even if Tony does take an out-of-state job, I'll be staying behind a couple of months to wrap some things up, including SPERGIN.
That said, I do have concerns about the number of charts made/submitted so far. Neither Tony nor I have had any time to make charts or really do anything other than homework, job hunting, and travel related to job hunting. Ben and I will meet up this week and discuss possible remedies to this problem.

Hoping to pre-register by tomorrow evening.
Here's one chart:

Any chance we'll have a submission extension, so more people can submit 4 songs?

Sorry, I've been MIA for a bit. I can get 4 charts in by the end of the night, and if you're really, really hurting for charts and don't mind bending the 4 song limit, I can get as many as needed. I can pay the pre-reg fee as soon as is convenient for anyone, but it'll probably have to be in person unfortunately. Sorry I zoomed in right at the last second before the deadline, I have been putting my efforts into other activities.

Hey guys, please read this post in full. This is IMPORTANT.
For various reasons including but not limited to lack of charts,
we are moving both the submission/preregistration cutoff date and the tournament itself to later dates
.
The new cutoff date for submissions is
June 15
, and the new tournament date is
August 4
.
We sincerely apologize if this upsets your already-made plans; if you have preregistered and can no longer make it, please let us know and we'll refund your preregistration fee. Any charts you have already submitted will remain in the pack.

I will probably have another submission or two, sorry for being so late.
these are not changed for global offset yet, so these are keyboard ready but not machine ready.
