- ORIGINAL POST -
S.P.E.R.G.I.N.: Stepcharts Produced by Enterprising Rhythm Gamers In the Northwest
Brought to you by Laura (Laura) and Ben (sfxazure)
With help from Jonathan (BlueSS)
4 June 2011/16 July 2011
Entry Fee: $5.00 if you preregister, $10.00 at the door.
Ben (sfxazure) recently moved to this area from the East Coast, and introduced me to several stepcharts from a tournament called D.O.W.N.S. (Dancing Over the Weekend to New Stepcharts) in which local players had a certain amount of time to create their own charts, which were then compiled into a tournament pack by the organizers. Information on D.O.W.N.S. can be found
here
.
Ben and I have decided that we absolutely need to give a tournament like this a go on the West Coast. I even managed to clear us a Saturday date this summer for the actual tournament - July 16th. But, in order to make this happen, we need YOU!
Phase One: Preregistration and Stepchart Submission
Due Date: 4 June, 2011
Preregistration will begin immediately and will run until the end of Phase One. Attendees who preregister will pay a discounted rate ($5.00 instead of $10.00.) Preregistration will be handled through PMs to Ben/sfxazure, who will accept payment through Amazon Payments, PayPal, or in person. To keep things organized, please use the title “SPERGIN Preregistration” for your PM.
You will have from today until June 4th to submit up to three songs (one stepchart each) to be included in the tournament pack. Please use
this submission form
, and make sure to identify yourself by name/forum name somewhere in the file. We encourage you to create and submit new stepcharts, but any are fine as long as you had a hand in their creation. Submitted songs/stepcharts will be rejected if they do not conform to the following rules:
1. The chart must be to a song no longer than three minutes and thirty seconds (3:30) in length. There are many reasons for this, including but not limited to the fact that we have to keep the tournament moving and the fact that 3:30 is ACME’s cutoff for a “long song.” We don’t want people to have to pay more to practice some charts than others.
2. Songs must be appropriate for play in public venues such as ACME Bowl. Please avoid profanity or find some way to work around it (clean versions, comedic censoring, etc.) Any content deemed inappropriate for a public venue will be rejected.
3. Songs must be ITG Arcade Ready. Details for preparing your songs can be found
here
. If your song is over 2 minutes, DO NOT .OGG PATCH IT. Also, it is recommended that you test your file on Acme’s ITG machine before submitting it, as different machines have different syncing.
4. Stepcharts must have at least 50 hittable arrows. We are all for exploring a wide range of difficulties, but please no “Beginner mode.” While there may be ways to make an interesting chart with under 50 steps, it would increase the likelihood of ties and slow the tournament down.
We also reserve the right to reject a stepfile for unusual reasons, such as the file crashing StepMania.
Note: If a song is rejected for any reason, you may submit a replacement; cleaned-up versions of rejected submissions can be submitted, as well as completely different songs/charts. After a song has been accepted for the pack, it is finalized and can not be replaced or modified.
As soon as a stepchart is accepted into the pack, it will be made available for download at the bottom of this post. This is because Ben and I will be entering the tournament ourselves, and we don’t want to gain an unfair advantage by viewing songs before they are released publicly.
By submitting charts to the tournament pack, you agree to enter the tournament. While people who have not submitted stepcharts may enter, those of you who submit stepcharts must enter. Because of this, we will not begin to evaluate stepcharts from any given entrant before they have preregistered for the tournament; consider your entry fee a form of collateral.
Phase Two: Practice
During this period of time, the organizers will combine your charts into a pack. If the organizers feel that there are not enough new stepcharts on which to run a tournament, we will find some quick hack to fix this issue. This should take about a week. After this, the pack will be released and installed on the ACME machine, so that you may practice these charts at your leisure. This should take about a month.
Phase Three: TOURNAMENT!
16 July, 2011, start time TBA
Please note: You will see the phrase “Because this is not intended to be a serious tournament...” many times. This is because this is not intended to be a serious tournament, and is supposed to be for fun! Please, then, do not get too caught up in minor details.
This will be a double elimination event with room for up to 32 entrants. Only songs from the S.P.E.R.G.I.N. pack will be playable in this tournament.
Seeding: Because this is not intended to be a serious tournament, seeding will be random. If you complain about this, we will make fun of you on the internet.
Matches: High seed gets first choice of machine side or pick order. The other choice goes to low seed. Each player will then pick one song of their choice to play against the other player. Whoever gets the highest percentage (as calculated by the machine) on a given song wins that song. (You know how this works by now.) If both players are tied at the end of two songs, a third song will be chosen from the S.P.E.R.G.I.N. pack by way of the ITG machine’s “random” function. If both players are still tied, another random tiebreaker will be chosen until the tie is broken.
Song Selection: Each player may only use a song as their “pick” once over the course of the tournament. Because this is not intended to be a serious tournament, either player may fail any song throughout all tournament rounds with no additional penalty - once you fail, your percentage is “locked” as your score.
Level Caps: Because this is not intended to be a serious tournament, there will be no level caps. Any chart may be picked at any time in the tournament, regardless of difficulty (or opponent, since seeing is random.)
Prizes: Once preregistration ends and we have a better idea of how many entrants we will have, we will determine a prize structure based on 90% of the entry fees. The remaining 10% of the cumulative entry fees will be donated to the
Seattle Asperger Support Network
.
Please note that although the “IN” in “S.P.E.R.G.I.N.” does stand for “In the Northwest,” out of state players are still more than welcome to participate and submit stepcharts. It is our formal policy to welcome out of state players with open arms.
Be assured that we have thought these rules through very carefully and have consulted competitors from D.O.W.N.S. to see what went right/wrong. If you have any complaints regarding our rule-set, please refer to our FAQ infographic
here
.
EDIT: Files are now available for download
HERE
as they are submitted!
IMPORTANT EDIT 2:
Due to June 4th coinciding with the end of finals week (among other things,) we are giving everybody an extra week to submit charts;
charts are now due by Midnight on Saturday, June 11th
. Additionally, each participant may now submit up to
four
charts.

I didn't read the entire thread but I am wondering if I can submit files even though I can't test them at acme? Like would I be able to send them to kevin to test or whatever?
We have no rule requiring that you test the chart at ACME yourself, though we strongly recommend that you get someone to test it there to make sure the sync is correct and the audio is loud enough.

Please note that you can't submit a chart unless you're planning on actually entering the tournament.
Edit: Also, edited main post, but... extension! You now have until June 10th (two weeks from yesterday) to create and submit charts! Also, you can submit four of them!

I submitted another chart! You can now download it!
Also, because the ACME machine is having some issues with USB, Tony is just going to be putting these charts on the machine as they're submitted. Some are already on there; the pack is "S.P.E.R.G.I.N."

I noticed that my Giggle at the Ghostie chart is on the machine, though I haven't officially submitted it. That's fine; it's better for people to see them before I officially submit them (after correcting sync, etc). Just know that the final version may have a slightly different sync/volume.

I'm planning to finish up my tournament chart shortly after June 7th (my last college final O.o)
Definitely thankful for the extension of the due date.
Would be easiest if I could find a day that Ben happens to be going to Powerplay/Acme so I could just hand him the entry fee money. Hm

I tried uploading mine via the official method but got that 777 error. So, here's my submissions, just download them here and one of the admins can put it onto the "official" page for me.

SONGS
Thanks for posting those, Suko. Your files have been uploaded to the official chart submissions page.
I've also gone ahead and released the rest of my SPERGIN charts. What's an edit tournament without a few 13s and 14s anyway?

Close to done with one song, have a couple things in mind that should be relatively little work to produce decent charts - I'd rather not fall back on my older work, but may wind up submitting one of my charts which is already on the machine... I've just been too busy to churn out a full set of new charts.
I know Laura is working on at least one more song and Tada has a couple I've helped test but which are not yet finalized. Assuming I throw together 4 songs, that brings us to ~21-22, which is a little thin for a tourney pack (the tournament
could
work with that few, but it'd get painfully repetitive in a hurry).
Is anyone else still planning to submit some songs? We're coming up on the revised deadline fast, so anyone intending to submit charts needs to do so soon in the next couple days.

Guys I think every single one of the SPERGIN songs on the Acme machine is a troll chart and it looks like half the upcoming submissions are too (not that I've thoroughly looked into it or played/seen more than just a couple but that's how it seems)...
I love you all dearly but I aint gonna waste 8 hours playing herp derp ridiculous charts to cartoon/little kids show theme songs and dumb shit silly anime songs....
I know it's not at all a serious tournament but can we please actually try to make some GOOD charts to GOOD songs? No offense to anyone here I hope, again, I haven't played 95% of the submissions but it's how it looks like it's headed...
Stuff like Suko's Stamp on the Ground was an awesome chart, or like Keby's Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride I would think would be much much more fun...
Anyway I don't mean to punch holes in all your hopes and dreams but I wanted to offer a reality check as to the level of absurdity it may actually end up on tournament day... Thank you, that is all

I agree that a tournament comprised of ENTIRELY troll CHARTS isn't a great thing, but I do want to point out that good songs are in the eye of the beholder. I pretty much hate all trance, which is like half of ITG customs, but I still play; to contrast, I really like silly anime songs.
I'm submitting at least one reasonably serious chart/song (though it's a song I like and may not be to your taste) and a lot of the charts to non-serious songs are actually pretty good. Fresh Goes Better is completely playable (I think it's good, but I like Hard charts), and the song is really catchy if you ignore the fact that it's the Mentos song. Suko's Spread Your Wings is totally legit. I actually really like Tony's chart to Oh No You Didn't, even though the song is Oh No You Didn't. Half of Ben's charts are only trolls in the sense that they are really hard. Talia's Kesha chart is legitimately fun to play, even though it's Kesha. Tada's charts that he's submitting are all to oldschool and Bemani game music, and they're actually fine.
I think we struck a decent balance. So far, I've made the worst charts of anyone, and that's mostly because I needed to make four charts when I didn't know how to make charts.
I understand your concerns, but so far I'm really happy with how this is going and I think it'll be a lot more fun than it looks come tournament day.

I definitely started with an intent to have one or two of my songs be clear attempts at trolling, but kind of found that to be a waste of my time, so, like a handful of other submissions, they're going to be trolling only to the extent that they might unusual picks, like Dare to be Stupid or Fresh Goes Better - both of which are fun charts to play - though my charts will be solid 9's/10's most likely.
We definitely have the bulk of the ridiculous troll charts already on the machine, as far as I can tell, and even with the fairly small song list thus far, I think more of these charts (by actual count, not just by proportion) are meant to be good, playable charts (albeit many to unexpected songs) than the DOWNS pack had and we definitely don't have anyone trying to troll as badly as what you'll see if you look at the DOWNS pack.

Troll charts FTL
I consider mine more-or-less serious. I won't claim these are my best charts. Far from it. But Spread Your Wings isn't a ridiculous song and Dare to be Stupid is pretty cool. Yakety Sax is a bit ridiculous, but I had to throw one crazy thing in there. I am allowed to throw in one more song (to make my total 4) and I have no problem using one of my older songs (preferably Romeo's Dead or Stamp on the Ground) if that's something people would want.
If anything, it would help add a bit more variety and more choices to this event.

Hopefully going to get mine done today.
Two are clearly trolling, but with the best intentions possible. Meaning they are playable. So much so I can see people getting ***'s on both.
Other two will be good and solid. Maybe stop gimmicks

I am all for a classic Suko chart making its way into the S.P.E.R.G.I.N. pack. I'm torn - I think Stamp On The Ground is your best chart, but I am way way way better at Romeo's Dead.

Ben I would just like to let you know I passed Cleaner with a 92.10% last night as a sightread.
I didn't think it was a 14 throughout the entire song...
until the end D: Which I bracket stomped my way through. I almost failed at the 24ths.
I would just like to say that I laughed really hard.
