March 28, 2011, 01:31:04 PM - ORIGINAL POST -

My good friend Robby (omgmkat of beatgamer.com) is running a really cool looking challenge tournament in Utah on 4/16.  I really want to attend, but don't want to go to Utah, and also really want to bring these fun challenges to all of you guys here, so I talked to him and Scott/Suko, and we came up with a really cool idea: What if we run this tournament on Scott's machine at his house at the same time that Robby is running this tournament in Utah, and we stream video to each other and compare scores over Google Docs?

So essentially, we were wondering if anyone would be interested in attending a silly challenge tournament on a short timescale (4/16 is two weeks from this Saturday) for the purpose of 1. Having fun and 2. Experimenting with interstate tournament play over the internet.  (For this tournament, we wouldn't be competing against Utah's players, to be clear - just comparing scores with them and watching each others' players complete the challenges via streaming video.)

Scott has given me the go-ahead to post this and gauge interest.  I know Sakuracon is coming up, but since that event is limited to con attendees, of which many PNWBemani.net players are not, I figured that this might not necessarily lead to over-saturation of tournaments.  If there is an entry fee at all, it'll be something like one dollar, and any and all prizes will be silly gag gifts and stuff; this tournament would be for fun only. Smiley

So... thoughts?

I just want to quote what OMGKat says in his post (which Laura linked to above):
Quote
BIG FAT DISCLAIMER: To some people, these challenges may seem unfair, unfun and completely ridiculous. The rules may not make sense and seem outrageous or incorrect. This event is not meant to be just another technical event and is aimed more towards strange physical and mental challenges that some people may not be able to complete. If you have any doubt in your mind whether or not you should enter this event, please do us all a favor and don't enter. If you're in an overly competitive state of mind when you compete in this event, you'll only be disappointed and angry when you're eliminated
I cannot stress this enough. I want this thing to be fun and enjoyable, not filled with tears and anguish.

So long as I'm not working at the time, I am game to participate.

Cry It's actually too soon for me to request off from work, though it's too early for me to know whether I'm scheduled that day. Heh

I'm amused at a Challenge Tournament that tells you what the challenges are in advance.

What, no pop quiz?  Smiley  (Anybody still around who remembers that challenge from one of the DDR Magic challenge tourneys?)

Oh man, I definitely remember the pop quiz!  Your challenge tournaments were always top-notch.

True, but the catch here is that (I think) the song choices are pre-determined, so you can't practice song X all day long for a specific challenge, because it might not end up being an option in the actual tournament.

I caved a little on this decision. It was both because people wouldn't stop bitching about the challenges being to hard or impossible, and also, because I haven't run challenge in a long damn time so many people in the current community don't know what a challenge tournament is. If we have another challenge tournament after this, I won't be telling people what the challenges are. Although, I've also had a very hard time coming up with new challenges so we could see a lot of these same ones.

Some of the song choices are pre-determined. A few of these challenges allow players to pick their own songs. I've changed a bunch of rules and modified some challenges a bit. I'd love to go by the old magic rules if at all possible, but all of the old rules threads have been destroyed (stupid ezboard. Still pissed about that).

Agreed. Nykkel always ran the best challenge tournaments.

Speaking of, Robby, since this thing looks like it's happening, we'll need to coordinate so that we do the same pre-determined songs as you guys (without you just telling me what they are far enough in advance that I can cheat; I still want to enter this thing. Grin)

It's less than a week and a half away from the proposed tournament date. What do you all think? Can I still count on some of you to show up and make this event rock!?

By the way, Robby's event is starting at 3PM mountain time according to the thread, so to make sure we stay in sync, we should be starting at 2PM EST.  Does that work for you, Scott?

sfxazure, are you "Ben", the guy I met at Gameworks while playing X2 a few weeks ago? You just moved to the area recently, right?

Yeah, Sfxazure is Ben. Smiley

Edit:  Since these rules weren't actually written by me, does anybody care if I enter this while simultaneously somewhat-administrating it?

To all of you who want to attend this event; To preserve my own privacy, I'm not going to post my address on a public forum. If you want to attend, I'd prefer it if you carpool with someone who does know how to get to my house, or as another option, PM me on the forums and I'll send you my address that way.

Regarding the tournament. The plan is to start the tournament at 2pm, but the machine will be on free play before that for warm ups. There is no "entry fee" or anything for this event, but if you want to donate some cash, food, or beverages, it would be welcome. (It is my bday on Friday, so don't be stingy. You moochers!) Roll Eyes

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, post'em here.

I would also like to note that I spent about fifteen dollars of my own money on "prizes" for first and second, so you guys had better be appreciative. Grin

I'd say get a variety pack from Costco or wherever. That way people can pick and choose.
