May 19, 2009, 11:33:52 AM - ORIGINAL POST -

Being that there aren't nearly enough tournaments around here, I have taken the liberty of looking into the possibility of having one at Acme Bowl in Tukwila this summer. I spoke with Bill Masterman who owns the machines on Monday and he is in full support of an ITG2 tournament and has agreed to put the machine on event play at a date of our choosing. I have not yet spoken with an event coordinator at Acme, so this is by no means a for-sure thing, but I wanted to put out there that this is in the early works and I wanted to get an idea of the interest level of the community. I think I will gun for mid-late July for a date for the tournament. As to how the thing will be run, we will most likely not run a qualifier and just say that this would be an expert-level tournament encompassing the full scope of difficulties and that any who are interested would be welcome and encouraged to come play. So please if you have any input or just want to express interest, post below =) Should be a lot of fun

Technically, he's not from Seattle.  That would explain that.  Actually same for you, so that would explain all of it.

As a sidenote to everyone else: I just got preliminary approval from Bill to run a slightly modified Extreme tournament at Paradise earlier (very late June, early July) this summer,

Where/What the fark is Paradise? Never heard of it.

And if you ever talk to me in person, I will not be sweet to you. I will be honest. Ask anybody here.

By now I'm sure Gerrack thinks we're all just a bunch of dicks with nothing better to do than yell at him. I've been following this thread since the first page and I'm not exactly sure why everyone seems to be giving him such flak. The guy is trying something new and I don't think he deserves to get attacked so harshly for it.

But anywho, I doubt I'll be able to make it to ACME this weekend, I have a friend visiting from out of town. Also, it's awesome how active this forum has gotten in the last week and I hope to meet some of you soon in person. You can't miss me, I'm a 6'7" player...that should be enough to identify me from anyone else in the crowd.

Wait, hold on a second.

You realize most of the work from organizing a tournament is doing the work AT THE GODDAMN tournament? You're an idiot.

Anybody on these forums can help publicize a tournament. Every one of the countless amount of events not at SakuraCon that I've run have worn me out the day after (The ones I ran at SakuraCon, I was dead tired for DAYS after...). It's a ton of work. If you're not going to bother doing the leg work the whole way, don't bother doing the work.

And if you ever talk to me in person, I will not be sweet to you. I will be honest. Ask anybody here.
Do you actually think people give half a fuck about what you say? Stop deluding yourself. Your immaturity astounds me.
You're can't even contain your immaturity to online.  Case in point was when MEWCON was when found Tofu to be more credible to run their tournament, so you got him back by having Kevin run S-Con.  And the only reason you run tournaments is to stay in the spotlight because you suck at games. What a little bitch

Good question, Suko. THIS is Paradise: http://www.bowlparadise.net/

I know that this is going to PARTICULARLY suck for you, being in Lynnwood and all, so if you need a carpool most of the way, feel free to hit me up - I think you're no more than 15-20 minutes from me, since Bellevue is like 20 minutes max from everything that touches 405.

I've driven further for tournaments in the past. Plus, this will give me the opportunity to eat at a Winger's restaurant again!

I'm aware. It seemed like everyone else had forgotten however getting worked up over nothing. And no need to call me an idiot. I assure you I'm quite the opposite.

And leave it up to who? Last I checked there weren't these kinds of tournaments for years so why now when someone finally steps up do you find it necessary to doubt my merit as an organizer. I'm doing the following work: Coordinating the time frame with Bill and Acme, answering questions and staying the masses on the forums, posting notices at the major arcades in the area, meeting with experienced competitors to determine and distribute the ruleset, helping to set up the tournament on tourney-day, and helping to clean up afterwards. About the only legwork I'm not doing is the actual running of it on the day-of. I can't believe I'm still getting shit for this...

No, I could not staff mewcon due to other obligations; I'd love to see the story of why they chose him over me. I would love to see the facts behind that.

In regards to Sakura-Con, The Gaming Manager there did not want to run a DDR tournament, then citing it being a waste of time. I had to convince them that it was a good idea, and asked for volunteers to run the tourney. Kevin came forward, and Amber also contributed her efforts to the cause.

No, The reason I run tournaments is to better the community. Skill level has nothing to do with motivation to run a tournament, but if you must know, I'm not that good at ITG/DDR. I never said I was.

Next time you want to bring an argument, feel free to bring some facts and not profanities.

@Gerrak: The problem with doing everything but the day of stuff is that the person who wrote everything and knows the rules best is no longer the mediator.  Additionally, there are tons of fairness issues that arise when the rulemaker is a direct competitor and it really has been considered standard procedure to not enter if you've had a heavy hand in planning a tournament.  Combining the two, any clarifications of rule intent (especially during one of your matches) are automatically questionable.  Plus, with so many people disagreeing with the way you're running it, who are you going to get to run the tournament the way you've written it?  If you can't see it through from beginning to end, there are tons of issues that come up.  We appreciate your intent and desire here, but this is not going in a stable fun direction as is, and you continue to butt heads with both the players and local organizers, so it's becoming less and less likely that someone will take it over for you.

We already cleared that part up. I'm running a silly fun tournament, Gerrak's tournament is for people who want to demonstrate serious ITG skill. There are enough posts from them (including allusions to a group of Canadians coming) that I can now see the point in having such an event; whether or not it does well, however, will remain to be seen.

Wow, just wowJune will be my 6-year mark. This is my first real community, though I have played with competitive-level players for years. I have not personally competed in any, that is part of the motivation for me; you wouldn't be organizing a tournament if you didn't want to compete in it either.
I had several reasons for asking... But most of the time we get someone who isn't competing to run it for us.

Anyway, that doesn't probably matter much. What did matter is asking your motivation for running the tournament.

Quote
Wow that's quite an accusation... I'm running it purely for myself. And my friends. And the people I play with all the time. And the people I have yet to play with but hope to meet because it'll be fun.

The reason for me asking this was for this:
This tournament is not for the community here, but the community is clearly invited.
By saying it's primary for yourself, it clears up who the ruleset is for. Before this point, a lot of us thought you were looking for opinions, trying to get this community involved. Then, when you kept ignoring all of our suggestions on how to run it, and it made you look like a jerk. Now, it's not that you are a jerk, you're just doing it for you, not us.  It clears it up, because now we know that we don't have to try to give suggestions because it wouldn't probably matter anyway.

Quote
And I'm not really a 'kid' I'm graduated at this point from college and working as a teacher.
You're the same age as the majority of us here.

guys. chill out.

Amber, you'd have to be on the forums more to be even remotely able to play mom here.

But no, thread not being locked, but close enough:
ALL FURTHER POSTS IN THIS THREAD MUST BE ABOUT Gerrak's TOURNAMENT, and not how you'd like it to change!

This thread will remain open until there is enough info for Gerrak to actually post an event thread.

Iori241, DMN: Take it elsewhere.
Talk about other tournament ideas: soneone make a new thread.
Talk about Laura's Tournament, in Laura's Thread.

Alright, so suggestions aside...I'm left still not very sure of what format this is that we're dealing with, exactly.

Oh, and someone mentioned the running a tournament while participating thing, I remember I did that with my first tournament eons ago, and some people bitched about it, so I made it a policy not to enter my own tournaments, until, I think it was about a year later or so, people started bitching because I wasn't entering tournaments I was running. (Because I was one of the better players there, I guess) You can't really win with people sometimes! Wink

The first rule of running any Bemani competition is "You're doing it wrong."  It seems to be impossible to appease more than 49% of the people involved in the discussion.

Oh, and if the date hasn't been set yet, I figured that I should mention the annual Canadian Rhythm Games conference is going to be in Vancouver on the 14th-16th of August, so if it's at all possible to avoid conflicting with that, it would be great on both sides! (I'd like to go to this event, and have people come to ours)

You're can't even contain your immaturity to online.  Case in point was when MEWCON was when found Tofu to be more credible to run their tournament, so you got him back by having Kevin run S-Con.  And the only reason you run tournaments is to stay in the spotlight because you suck at games. What a little bitch
Dude, you really need to check your facts before making posts like this.

1. There was no DDR at MEW; we couldn't get pads.
2. I was Gaming Manager.  Jon also expressed an early interest in the position.  I went to the meetings, put forward the organizational skills, and focused my attention, so I got the position, while Jon busied himself with a much more significant commitment with Sakuracon.  He didn't even really contend for the position beyond one or two posts on the board, so you can't really say they found me more credible; it would be like saying Radioshack is a more credible retailer of electronics than a fruit stand.  The fruit stand isn't even selling electronics, so it's not a legitimate comparison.
3. Jon and I have talked about what happened, what appeared to happen, and what will happen in the future.  Sure, I'm sour about not running the DDR Tournament at Sakuracon, but it's been worked out, and I don't feel that Jon's motives were underhanded or ill-founded.  I wasn't committed to take my commitment to Sakuracon seriously; I was too caught up with just the DDR.  It was right that he picked Kevin to run it, even if I might have run a smoother, faster, or better tournament.

Hopefully this clears up some stuff.  For the record, I'm pretty sure I'm the only one on these forums beside my sister who was actually AT MEW Con.
