Guitar Hero 3 - Limit 64 players

Signups open when Sakura-Con does!

Please sign up ONLY if you will be playing, not if you might be. This is to ensure everybody who has signed up will not have to wait for you during the event.
EVENT BEGINS AT 11AM SHARP SATURDAY!

We will be using the XBOX 360 version for this tournament.

Players will be placed randomly in one of four 16-player groups. These groups will be bracketed, with at least two groups running concurrently.

Group Play - PRO FACE OFF
-Each match, players will be given a random group of 3 songs to play. Both players choose one they wish NOT to play, and the remaining song is played.
-Players will agree on sides.
-Players must play at least MEDIUM, and must agree on a difficulty. If no agreement is reached, MEDIUM must be played.
-Highest score wins. If still tied, most successful notes wins. If there is still a tie, one of the two songs not chosen will be played on BATTLE.

Semifinals and Finals
-Each of the 4 pool winners will be placed in a 4-player bracket.
-Semifinal and 3rd place matches are now best-of-3; Finals will be best-of-5.
-Players will take turns selecting songs, A coin flip will determine who selects first.
-HARD and EXPERT will be the only difficulties used.
-If there is a 1-1 tie (or 2-2 in the final round), a final song will be played on EXPERT to determine the winner; this song will be randomly chosen.
-Players will be allowed to use one 45-second 'time-out' each match to use between songs to rest.
-Highest score wins. If still tied, most successful notes wins. If still tied, longest note streak wins. If still tied, the player who chose the song must choose another.

General Rules
-No warm-ups or casual play will be allowed during the tournament.
-Quiet will be asked for when matches are going on so the players are not distracted.
-Players are encouraged to bring their own guitar controllers, however if controllers are modified in any way, the organizer (I, Jon) must approve of them before being used in the event.
-Any player using an illegally modified or otherwise unapproved modified controller will be disqualified.
-Players cannot use regular XBOX 360 controllers for this tournament.
-Any judgment call that otherwise occurs during the tournament will be made by the organizer, and is final.
-Have fun!

I'll compete for DDR if there's a sightread tourney.  Otherwise, I'll probably just chill.

Use the joystick as the strum and L/R as the whammy bar, and the pushbuttons as the guitar keys. ;P  I'd fap to that shit.

Just play some freebird-like song on hard; 10-minute break. ;P

That would be a fantastic strategy - except Freebird is on GH2, and we're using GH3

Getting back on track... I'll most likely run the Pop'n Music tournament again this year.  I dont' think Adventure CS will be out in time, so it'll probably be based on 14 Fever CS.  I'll start work on a flyer for it soon and try and get the rules up.  It'll most likely be ran similar to last year.  I hope more people show up this time around.

Oh yeah, the game will be played on an Pop'n Music ASC that, while not official, is sized and functions like an arcade controller.   You must use the controller provided for the tournament, not a IIDX controller, or a homemade joystick concoction involving 9 small buttons and a strum button... that would just be silly! Heh.

Because I'm pretty sure it wasn't noticed, I'd really like a sightread tourney.  I won't stand a chance in a regular tourney, especially ITG.

Also, DMN, I IM'd you in September about possibly bringing cabinets.  Thinking rationally, I probably won't have any done until at least July; I just wanted to make sure you weren't specifically expecting me to bring any.

@DT: Obviously this is DMN's choice in the end, but I'm pretty sure a sightread tourney is out of the question given that it's Sakuracon, not a tournament where we can assume no one but veteran players.  The ability to practice for it thoroughly is something necessary to get good turnout.  Sightread/r21 tourneys are fun, but it's really just the wrong crowd for one.

@DMN: I should probably make my way to a meeting and sign up as gaming staff sometime soon, when is the next general meeting?

ROCK BAND BATTLE OF THE BANDS
Player Limit: 96 (24 4-player bands, teams are required to field a 4-player team to be eligible for this event, individual sign-ups will be allowed and formed into 4-players teams if room is available)
Start time: 3pm Saturday

QUALIFYING ROUND - 8 TEAMS ADVANCE
on 1/14/08, a list of seven (7) songs will be posted in this thread. On the day of the event, three (3) songs will be chosen for teams to use as a qualifying song. All 4 players must play the song on MEDIUM difficulty. Teams will then play the song chosen until the song is either completed or failed..

QUALIFYING LIST
Maps - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Go with the Flow - Queens of the Stone Age
Pleasure (Pleasure) - Bang Camaro
Here It Goes Again - OK Go
Time We Had - The Mother Hips
Vasoline - Stone Temple Pilots
The Hand That Feeds - Nine Inch Nails

THIS LIST WILL BE NARROWED TO 3 ON THE DAY OF THE EVENT

Qualifying will be based on a scale as follows:
Overall Score (a failed song scores 0). If there is a tie, combined percentage of notes hit will apply. Top 8 scores advance to the brackets. In the event less than 8 teams pass the song, the teams that got the farthest through their song will advance.

BRACKET ROUND
Teams will be seeded in a bracket based on performance in the Qualifying Round. The object of this round is to score more points than the other team.

In the round of 8, one song will be played and selected by the higher seeded team. The lower seeded team will then select individual difficulties prior to playing to which the other team will have to match by a points scale, which plays as follows:

Medium - 1 pt
Hard - 2 pts
Expert - 3 pts
EXAMPLE: Team A goes first and has 2 players select Medium, and 2 select Expert. This is a difficulty score of 8 points. This means Team B must match this scale by playing the same difficulties, having each player play Hard (4x2=8) or playing 1 on medium, 2 on hard, and one on expert (1+4+3=8).

The team with the highest score wins the match and advances to the semifinals. Failed scores go as a 0 and progress of the song will be recorded as a tie break.

The semifinals will play exactly the same as the round of 8 - 1 song, top score advances.

The final round will play as a best-of-3 format; with the higher seeded team selecting first song, The lower seeded team selecting the second song, and a third song randomly selected (if needed).

The best one-song performance, in terms of score and exciting the audience, will get a prize, as well as the top 2 teams.

No tourney's that I'd try for yet, I'm probably not going to enter the DDR tournaments if they have some. I don't even stand a chance against the good people in Portland let alone anyone in Washington. I'll just stand around and look awesome instead.

I just sent a buddy of mine this thread. he loves Popn and GH. I myself would only be interested in a DDR/ITG tourny. But if there is one, then I might come over to the West Side with my pal for a day full of tournaments. That'd be so awesome.

Anyone want to form a team for Rock Band? I can play all those songs on all instruments on Expert - possible exception of drums or singing on one or two. I know for sure I can sing Hand that Feeds, Here it Goes Again, Pleasure (Pleasure) and Vasoline. I don't think I can expert drum Vasoline yet, though.

Just wanted to point out that a DDR or ITG tournament would probably be good.  It's still way more popular than Pop'N, and more playable than Rock Band.

I don't appreciate being called a prick.  As for the tournaments, I don't really know why theres no DDR/ITG tournament.  I'm just donating my time to run the Pop'n tournament, I figure people should have fun with that.  If someone wants to host a DDR/ITG tournament, I'm sure the gaming staff would allow it.

Jon hasn't been able to find a DDR or ITG machine afaik.

Not having a DDR tourney 'cause there's no machine is like not having sex 'cause your penis is short.

Someone just make sure I have a USB to RCA video cable, a TV, and some decent speakers (any kind) and I'll run it off StepMania.

EDIT: oh, some DDR pads would be nice.  None of mine are consistent enough for tourney use.
