So our community contains a TON of knowledge about DDR, Arcade machines, and the Bemani world in general. In an attempt to educate others (like Arcade managers) I had the idea to start an article collection that's publicly available.

The ideas I had so far are:

DDR Machine Maintenance
Cleaning (detailed step by step, with pics)
Business Card Trick  (detailed step by step, with pics)
How to test if a sensor is reported bad (detailed step by step, with pics)

Tournaments
How to run a DDR Tournament
DDR Tournament Ideas / Types of tournaments
How to run an air-hockey tournament

How to Play (New people who visit our arcades might not know what the features/settings are)
   DDR
   ITG
   Pop'n
   Drummania
   Guitar Freaks

Arcade Tips
Best tips and food suggestions for Acme Bowl
Best tips and food suggestions for Power Play
Best tips and food suggestions for Narrows Bowl

I'm open to any suggestions - and I'm going to need help from anyone who wants to contribute to this. It'll become a resource for bemani players all over, but especially our community, and the arcades in our area. Once it's created, I'll be sending it out to arcades that have DDR in case they need the information (say for repair techs who might not know why people are complaining about the 'bad sensors').

I think it'd be helpful if we helped each other with content. There isn't any fight for who gets to write an article, we'll all do these as much as we can.

So more ideas? Anyone want to start working on some of them?
DO NOT STEAL ANYONE ELSE's CONTENT! The more graphics and pictures the better too.

So this is easy enough to edit once you know what's going on... but the code is messy. See below:
Code:
[img]pnwbemani.net/g/grey.gif[/img][img]pnwbemani.net/g/green.gif[/img]
[img]pnwbemani.net/g/grey.gif[/img][img]pnwbemani.net/g/grey.gif[/img]
[img]pnwbemani.net/g/green.gif[/img][img]pnwbemani.net/g/grey.gif[/img]
[img]pnwbemani.net/g/green.gif[/img][img]pnwbemani.net/g/grey.gif[/img]
[img]pnwbemani.net/g/yellow.gif[/img][img]pnwbemani.net/g/red.gif[/img]
[img]pnwbemani.net/g/grey.gif[/img][img]pnwbemani.net/g/red.gif[/img]
[img]pnwbemani.net/g/grey.gif[/img][img]pnwbemani.net/g/green.gif[/img]
[img]pnwbemani.net/g/grey.gif[/img][img]pnwbemani.net/g/grey.gif[/img]
[img]pnwbemani.net/g/green.gif[/img][img]pnwbemani.net/g/grey.gif[/img]

I originally thought of the 1-9 scale, but without a very ridiculously defined numbering scale, nobody would remember the difference between a 5 and 7, or 4 and 6. What's an 8 vs a 9?

New Scale:
= Excellent. No or very few pad misses.
= Good. Occasional pad misses.
= Bad. Frequent pad misses / pad sticks or fails to respond.

This system is much clearer and visually easier to understand. It loses a minor level of detail, yet simplifies how a pad should be rated.

Feedback? Smiley

Been busy all last week. I finally had some free time to check the changes out. I haven't investigated your pad rating thing yet, Jon. However, I did update my Business Card Trick article with images. I just have two things to add. Perhaps we should have album sub-folders to put all the images in for that category.

For instance, instead of me dumping my three diagrams into the Articles folder, I should dump them into a /HowTo subfolder to prevent clutter.

My only other suggestion (if it's possible) would be to allow previewing of articles before finalizing an edit. I know this isn't SUPER critical, since you can continue to re-edit an article until it turns out the way you want, but I thought I should mention it.

That's fine with me. Do you have permissions to add sub-folders? I think you should...

The mod that gives this feature does not have that as an option. Sad  I also with we had this feature, but I don't think it's possible at all unless someone re-writes the plugin.

I am in love with the new article system and arcade location database.
This site looks so much smoother and better with every update.

I went around and searched for other dance/Bemani game forums to compare our layout to theirs.
I'd say we stand along side Bemanistyle and Zenius-i-vanisher as one of the best looking Bemani forums on the net, not to mention this is just for the PNW! Most others use that free PhpBB style.
Thanks a ton for keeping this site going Jon!

Thanks, Kevin! Feedback like that is what keeps me motivated to improve the site. Smiley

I definitely like to try to make everything I do the best possible; so as I continue to learn and think of ways to make the site better, I put them in.  If anyone has ideas or ways that the design, functionality, or usability could be improved, I'm all ears! Cheesy

Jon, how do you fund the site? Do you accept donations or need any financial help? I'm not exactly in the best place financial atm...However, I wouldn't mind holding a PNWBemanithon or something. I could open up my machine for free play all day, and people could pay $XX to play. The majority of that cash could go to you as donations to the site. The rest could buy drinks, food, etc for the event. Let me know what you think.

Edit: Or, instead of me giving out my address on the internet to (possibly) some people I don't know...perhaps we could have a "PNWBemani donor play-a-thon". Where peeps who helped donate a certain amount could then attend an all day ITG free play event.

I'd be OK with either options really. Just wanted to throw that out there.

The site is currently funded by my own personal funds, any funds raised from running a tournament, and any money raised from the new Amazon Referral Link on the left (Under user stats). I just started using Amazon referral on some of my sites, but it has already proven to be much more successful than Google AdSense. I might be removing adsense completely from the site (only guests normally see those ads anyway).

I greatly appreciate the want to keep the site up by contributing financially, and thankfully the site is ok in that area. My entire hosting account (This site + a few others) is $6.50 a month, and then $10/year for the domain name. I'm dedicated enough that I don't mind putting up the cost as long as the community stays awesome. Truthfully, I'd be paying for my hosting for my other sites anyway, even if this community were to die (such a sad thought). Smiley

I do spend a significant time making the site more awesome though; and most of the article edits will probably only come from me. I don't mind though, otherwise I wouldn't do it, but that is time I put into the community.

A "PNWBemani Play-a-thon" would be pretty awesome though. Cheesy  I'm all for raising funds for this community by having an event that the community can turn around and enjoy! If there's anything this community needs, it's more awesome events where we can get together and play some Bemani!!!

To be honest, one of the ways that everyone can help is to link to PNWBemani on any websites they have or have other music game websites post about us / post to our articles.

I've done a lot of work SEO optimizing the site, and the more links we can get to our content, the better that will go.

Great Example: Search Google for "ddr maintenance"  or "clean ddr machine"
If we can get more great content for the Articles system, we can continue to make this one of (if not the best) DDR Community on the net!

ARCADE MAP FINISHED - All WA/OR Locations have been added to the Arcade Map, and Articles have been created for each one. That means you all can edit arcade details from here on!

If you don't have permissions to edit Articles, let me know and I'll get you them. Cheesy

Have you thought about making a Bemani wiki as it's own, stand-alone site? I realize we've already got a wiki started here, but having it restricted to only registered forum members kind of makes it a difficult thing grow. I was just thinking that, as DDRFreak gets closer and closer to death, it might be useful to have a publicly-accessible wiki site that could hold a treasure trove of miscellaneous DDR/Bemani information. Think of it as your next major web project, Jon. =]

Several sites have already started bemani wikis before, and they're still around.
Some of them were too ambitious, some have good info; but I don't think there's enough interest of people to save all of the info in one place.

http://wiki.bemanistyle.com/
http://wiki.bemaniso.ws/wiki/Main_Page
http://vjarmy.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page  (Mostly IIDX and Pop'n)
http://wiki.voiddd.com/ (Not English)

If we can leave the general information for the big sites, and focus more on what we know really well, I personally think that will work better for us. Smiley
