- ORIGINAL POST -
So much that I'm willing to make a pointless, stupid topic on it. Working on a 5-page paper right now, trapped inside on a nice, sunny day.
Current progress:
5 pages!
Goal: 5 pages.
VICTOLY

If you really want to get away from pointless and stupid writing, I would suggest looking into one of the interdiciplinary writing courses offered at UW. They're ENGL 197/198/199, and they link a writing class that meets three hours a week, to a larger (usually 100-level) class. Right now I'm in 199, which is linked to Astronomy 101, and it's a great class. Much more focus is put on refining structure and improving paper clarity/cohesion, unlike the English 1x1 series, which mainly focuses on... bullshitting and over-elaborating/over-analyzing. Plus, it's one less hour a week for the same amount of credits, and you only have to maintain the knowledge of one subject area for both classes.
I did take Astro 102, which is basically a more quantitative version of 101... I'd basically have to take the class over, but 131 embodies the kind of writing I really hate to do, so this is looking like a good way to go. I am looking into ENGL 198 too if I don't feel like repeating a class. It's not right up my alley, but I have done decently in social issues classes. GEOG 207 may work for me too, since I got a surprise 4.0 in ECON 200. Feels so good to have the rest of my writing credits covered.
EDIT: 100th post in Random Chat.

Well, yeah. It won't be very fun if you repeat a class, but they change the linked classes for interdisciplinary English pretty much every quarter, so there will most likely be something there that you're interested in. I know this is how I'm getting the rest of my 15 required writing credits.

Well, things are looking a lot better in terms of this class:
- I took the fact that I was getting a lot of criticisms on my papers as me doing crappily in the class. Turns out that was not the case; professor just likes to give out criticisms to help us.
- The second "sequence" is more in my favor than the first one.
That 2.0 I'm shooting for is looking like no problem now.

Mega-bump.
Guys, I think the world is going to end soon. My professor actually loved my first major paper (the very same one I was slaving over at the start of this thread). She actually photocopied it and gave it to the entire class as an example, and asked me if I wanted to get it published in an official English department magazine.
This can't be for real...

Update:
This thread's purpose is just about over. I turned in my portfolio today, and all that's left is getting my grades... If I get enough /r/s to upload my papers, I will. Somehow, all four papers that I turned in during the second half of the quarter were all hits as well, and my second major paper turned out to be even better than the other one... This is really quite scary.

lol, I have a final draft of my term paper due at midnight, then it's over.
English 199 (linked with Astronomy 101) actually was really fun. If you guys that go to UW ever get the chance to take a class by Chris Laws, DO IT.

Hey, I know Chris Laws!
He taught a summer class for like 7-9th graders a year or two ago.

I actually sort of like the idea of a "post your college research papers" thread. I think most of us geeks have all done really funny shit with our papers-- I found a way to cite the SomethingAwful forums extensively once, and I know that Tony once wrote a paper which used mainly bemani message boards as its resource.

I wasn't able to do anything fun with any of my papers. Also, none of these were really research papers, per se.
