January 31, 2007, 12:48:19 PM - ORIGINAL POST -

This thread had to start some time.  Although I've seen exactly zero people post that didn't already talk to eachother already, the aim is to have more people show up, right?  Yes.

About me.

name: James
age: too old
how to find me: I'm 5'9 and half asian.  Like everybody else at ACME, but whatever Smiley
I show up at ACME bowl every now and then.
I like DDR more than ITG for the most part but give both equal playtime, and also I play a lot of IIDX at home, it's a great game.
I am what can be generalized as a "scorer." That is, I play to get the highest score possible on everything.
My tag is "5DAI" on ITG/IIDX or "GODAI" on DDR usually.  Sometimes other names if I feel like it.
I am a pretty darn good simfile maker (as judged by me) but don't make a whole lot due to time constraints.  I take requests but they don't get fulfilled a lot for the same reason.

Nice to meet you.

I play ITG/DDR, Pump It Up, IIDX, Pop'n, Guitar Hero, tennis, piano, da sax, and some other stuff.  A lot of my time is spent writing and producing music.  I only visit the Lloyd Center Tilt about once week to play 2 or 3 rounds, but I usually go during busy times so there's a decent chance you'll run into me eventually (...like there are any players in Portland I don't know already).

Yeah.

Did you get here via my link at LG.org?

Always nice to see people I've actually chatted with enough to recognise.

Also, I never realised you were at about the same difficulty level as me.  I can pass Max300, but only with a low B no bar. (mid A w/ bar, although my stamina's dropped a lot so I don't know if I can still get it)

It's nice to see people now and then who aren't head, shoulders, and, in many cases, torso above me at DDR around these forums now and then.

Also, WHY IS EVERYONE TALLER THAN ME?
I'm supposedly at the 70th percentile for men. :?

Been playing Bemani/music games for nearly 8 years now. I work at a major video game publisher as a tester. I run Gaming at Sakuracon, the region's biggest Anime con. I run an internet radio show right here Thursday nights. I also am the founder of one of the largest Bemani teams on the West Coast, Team Mediocrity.

Oh yeah, I've run 12 DDR/ITG tournies now. 13 comes later this year.

Yo.
Name: Chris
H: 5'9"
White, um, and whiter.  Brown hair, short-medium length.  I like having long hair but it's not good for business stuffus, so...
Age: 24

Games of choice: Drummania and Guitarfreaks, though I can do doubles on DDR to about 9; and won't turn down a game of ITG.  I'm not good at Beatmania anything.  Generally I'm in it for just the fun; I have challenged myself to improve particularly in Drummania and Guitarfreaks and can finally do cross-hand on DM and alternate picking for GF, whee.  Not really a score hog, though I generally try to S as many songs as possible.

History: I'm originally from the L.A. area of Southern California but went to Tacoma for college from 2001-5, then I worked abroad in Japan for a year and a half, and now I'm back here!  So I've actually been around the community for a while but apparently I'm still "mysterious," probably because I usually don't come to any tournaments (though I am one for social gatherings in general).    If you need any help with Japanese translation or whatnot, look me up.

Usual spots: Narrows on Friday afternoons because GF 11/Drummania 10 is hot =D and pink! And has "L-Saizu no Yume" which rocks.
I did just go to ACME, and I live nearer to ACME than Narrows, so I'll likely be coming by ACME now and then for their Drummania/Percussion Freaks 8th mix for some nostalgia drumming.

Other interests: Anime, manga, drawing, singing, bicycling and jogging, drumming, Warioware =D

nah, but 1player will take you a long way in that game. The AI is near perfect except for some weird diplomacy and economic choices.

High school 2nd year != University 2nd year.

As for your second line, I'm not going to get that far.  (Waits for Laura to make a smart-assed remark)

Hi!  I'm Arka.  I'm from the fine Northwestern state of Indiana.

...but, uh, I'm posting here because I hope to move to Seattle in a few months. Smiley

I love pretty much all Bemani games.  I especially love Pop'n Music.  I also like IIDX and the Super Session games.  I enjoy the occasional knock-off, such as Guitar Hero I/II.  And I theoretically like dancing games (DDR/PIU > ITG), but I can't really play them at present due to a balance problem.

You'll know me if you see me.  I'm 5'10, imposingly huge, have eyes that seem to slide back and forth between brown and green (and are currently stuck at ringed-green-and-brown) and a small cicatrix in the middle of my forehead.  Most people think I overdress.  I have no idea what they're talking about.  Plus right now I carry a 4' wooden stick for use as a balance aid, though I use a smaller and much less useful collapsible cane when I need to avoid antagonizing the administrators.

Anything else we're supposed to be posting in this thread?  Oh, I play many musical instruments well, yet I really don't play *Bemani* well at all - that's amusing enough.

Nah, nothing else is "supposed" to be posted here. What instruments do you play?

Why will you be moving to Seattle (if it works out)?

Arkaaito
Read February 07, 2007, 07:12:52 AM #50

What instruments?  Well, I play piano, flute, oboe, violin, and harp at a passable professional level.  My best instrument is oboe; I briefly planned to be a professional oboist, but I decided I wanted to do other things with my life, too.  I also sing, though the recent restrictions on activity have put something of a strain on my voice.  I also dabble in trombone and guitar, am slowly but surely learning the drums, and will soon be taking up clarinet.  I can play related instruments within reason, such as organ, harpsichord, synth (though not anything really advanced), recorder, etc...

So in short, way too many.  Cool

Why will I be moving to Seattle (if it works out)?  Well, I'm not sure which type of reason you're asking about.  One is that I'll have an awesome job offer there...  Tongue

Another is that the Midwest and academia are both very inhospitable places to visibly have anything that can be labelled as a "disability" - even if it's not that severe, you think you can overcome it with physical therapy, etc.  The summary version: When a member of staff brought me into her office to lecture me for 45 minutes on how I wasn't welcome here if I needed that stick to get around, I started looking for jobs outside of academia.  I've worked out in Seattle before, and I loved both the company and the city, plus there's an outstanding balance clinic in the region, so they were my first choice.  In addition, if I decide I want to get back into the game, University of Washington is right there, and it's actually an excellent research university (though not in artificial intelligence per se).

Great, now the forum will forever identify me as "that person with the balance problem."  Tongue
