- ORIGINAL POST -
Is it just me, or does it seem like a high percentage of the online ITG community is filled with the biggest elitist asshats around?
I barely check rhythmatic.net or aaronin.jp much anymore because it seems like they're all xenophobic elitists who attack anyone who has a dissenting opinion from their own and can't 99% 12's.
I just read a post about bracket raping more-or-less ruins the game (or the experience). Granted, this person said it in a really dumb way, but instead of an informative debate you get three replies that say something very close to "You're so f*cking stupid, get out of this thread and out of this forum".
Perhaps it's because I'm considerably older than the average player , but I just don't get the high school mentality and humor that many of these elitists seem to get off on.
Oh, and I'd hate to be a newbie trying to get some help on a forum like rhythmatic or AIJ. I imagine they would tear'em apart and make'em never want to play the game again.

Yeah, its like this with a lot of games in general. Theres always those who have to be super-competitive 24/7 and those who just play games for fun.

Honestly, I've found that there are plenty of DDR people who have the same mentality. I've been around for a long time with these games, and really I feel like people in general aren't as bad as they used to be. I like when people are competitive, and I'm trying very hard to be able to be competitive, but I really appreciate those who just play to have fun as well. I think my problem arises when people are only one thing or the other. It's the same with the bar really. I've seen so many people attempt to let go during a song and then just get plain scared and reach for it again. But then again, until recently I've been sort of a "no-bar" elitist. In the end, I think anyone willing to argue the issue probably just loves these sorts of games. To me, passion is passion, and everyone loves in their own way. If someone's being a jerk it's really annoying of course, but for the most part I've been able to find an understanding with people along the whole spectrum.

Yeah as a frequent AIJ user I'll tell you right now that's just not true at all, and I have no idea where you're getting that idea. I don't know if I should be offended or not because I consider AIJ to be the best online community for people who play dancing games seriously. We're all pretty supportive of one another and only slam others' scores if it's to try and entice them to do better (and I do mean "slam" very relatively, more like "hey that Delirium could be better dude, go for the 99"). I can't 99% 12's and I definitely feel more at home there than here, if that explains anything.
Don't get me wrong, I know most of the people there are really hardcore dancing game players, and that alone is probably what alienates new players most of the time. But uh... there are plenty of other sites that are noob-friendly? And does it matter?

Can't say shit for rhythmatic, but when the rare noob does come to AIJ to ask questions, we field them and try to be helpful. But wouldn't most of those people go to DDRfreak instead? And wouldn't THAT make them never want to play the game again?
I really don't know where this is coming from because there's just as many elitists for DDR as there are for ITG. Have you seen the dumbass no bar community on youtube, for instance? For a few YEARS at least they would troll videos of people getting good-to-ridiculous scores with the bar by saying "yea nice try y don't u drop the safe-t next time faggot." Have you ever heard of CoreyBlaze before? He's the definition of a DDR elitist gone wrong and I'm struggling to think of an ITG equivalent for him, at least on AIJ.
Oh also, AIJ is not an "ITG community," it's a dancing games community. There are strictly DDR-only players (myself technically included for the time being) who post there and get along fine.

It's not just ITG players, and it's not just music game players; it's just the nature of the beast in anything competitive with any decent sized community.
The problem lies wherein ITG players were
already
the top tier players at DDR, so you got the elite of the elite; and with that comes the biggest ego-ed douches of them all. There's plenty of good people too.
and Ethan, I hate to say this, but DDRFreak
is
very beginner friendly. Just... only... beginner friendly.

which is why we all basically left and went elsewhere.
Everyone has a valid point in this thread. There are asshats for both games. I find elitists on both sides all the time.
Personally, the fanboy/elitists that get on my nerves the most are the Guitar Hero kids. The ones who see GF/DM and will never play it because it "ripped of guitar hero".
granted that's their own ignorance that they could cure if the just tried the damn game.
Hell I used to be a huge DDR fanboy. I remember when ITG first came out, I immediately pushed it to the side without a second thought. Then one day I was at an amusement park back in colorado that had an ITG2 dedicab. I gave it a try, and I fell in love with the game.
All I'm saying is that what makes people elitists and fanboys is ignorance ignorance ignorance ignorance. It's ridiculous.
While I'm not a huge poster on AIJ, I do read frequently, and like discovolante said. It's not as bad as you say scott. Most of those kids aren't douches.
Besides one thing everyone has to take into consideration is that it is the INTERNET, were one can be anonymous, and say outrageous things. I never judge until I meet someone in person.
I wouldn't say a high percentage of kids are elitists for ITG. The problem is that the ones that are elitist have gotten the most attention, and therefore everyone assumes all the ITG kids are like that, which is not true for one second.

I guess I enjoyed the noobish nature of DDRFreak. Everyone rips on the site, but I don't really understand why. Lately it's so lagged out that people can barely make posts and I'm certain it's only a matter of time before the site dies completely.
I suppose you're all correct about AIJ. I probably haven't spent enough time there to get a true feel for what kind of demographic posts there. You're right though, I was incorrect in saying that "a high percentage of ITG players were elitist". This is general and vague. I was simply pointing out that, in my experience, the people on these forums appear to have been asshats to people outside their inner circle.
I'm sure that, back in the day, there were plenty of DDR asshats, but I don't think I've seen any of them around for a while now. There will always be fanboys on both sides. No-bar elitists might have existed back in the day, but now it feels like we're experiencing the other side of this debate.
Didn't intend this thread to ruffle anyone's feathers, I just wanted to know if anyone else saw some of these communities the same way I did.

I could not agree with this less. That youtube thing I mentioned is still prevalent, though less so than before. Most bar players (in my experience) just keep their heads down and play the game. More often than not it's the no bar players who even bring anything up. And at the end of the day, if you're getting worse scores and losing tournaments because you don't use the bar, it's your funeral. I (and I think most of the competitive players worldwide) really don't care either way. Same goes for the top tier/low tier characters in fighting games.
Don't get me wrong though, I have nothing but respect for people who choose to play no bar. To bring back the tier example, someone who still mains Dan or Sakura in SF4 and wins is going to get more respect than someone who mains Sagat or Ryu and wins. The difference is in Street Fighter that happens somewhat often, and I think the last time a strictly no bar player won a major tournament was years and years ago.

While I don't know the validity of this statement, I do know that a major paradigm shift occurred when GPF Lith beat Tigger in SoCal around 2003 or 2004. Lith represented speed mods and the bar and Tigger repped 1x no bar, and that match proved that people can play at the best levels using the bar and speed mods and caused people to rethink the 1x no bar thing. I made it sound like people thought the bar and speed don't help, but it was more that they thought only shitty players used those "crutches," as they were called.

I gave up my no bar elitism long ago. I still prefer to play without the bar, but that's only because I enjoy playing the game that way, and at my height the bar is not easy to use.

I confess I don't either, but the only serious no bar performances in recent history that I can think of are... zilch. Strictly no-bar tournaments, sure, but never at a mixed event. There wouldn't happen to be videos from that SoCal tournament, would there?

I'm 6'7" tall, so I have to lean really far back just to reach the bar. It makes doing anything with crossovers extremely difficult (if I'm using the bar). This is why I mostly play sub 11's and generally don't use the bar on anything below a 10.
This will give you an idea of how tall I am...

I think it's important to differentiate between elitists, pros, and hardcores. Elitists are cunts. Pros are good at this game but not necessarily serious/elitists. Hardcores take every game seriously and don't get butthurt when they aren't pro: they get better.
I consider myself a hardcore gamer and it really pisses me off to be lumped in with anything else. I'm not pro at any game except maybe Mario Kart Double Dash, which has no comp community so being good at it means nothing. I'm definitely not an elitist; I'm the guy who's put in 400 hours of Monster Hunter helping new hunters get into the game and learn the ropes. I'm the guy who sees someone with great timing but bad step technique and offers them friendly tips on improving their scores between songs. I'm also very definitely not a recreational gamer. I play games very seriously and don't game without goals. Whether I'm great attacking, perfect attacking, freestyling, or whatever, I'm focusing 100% on accomplishing something, not enjoying myself, so it gets really tiring when people complain that I'm using the bar on an easy 6 or tell me I should try to PA instead of GAing when I feel like PAing. I'm not interested in showing people how good I am because I'm not good, and I'm not interested in playing easy songs unless I'm freestyling for an audience or AAAing/BBBing it.
EDIT:
As a side note, I've been an elitist before. I've been a casual gamer before. I hate myself for both and don't stand by anything I've said which is inconsistent with what I'm saying now.

I can understand the Mario Kart thing. I think the thing I'm best at in life is Mario Kart 64, but that'll never get me anywhere. Well, I won a tournament at a birthday party once. I probably won stickers or something.

I think you just hate what ITG is so much and you hate what ITG has done to dancing games so much that you'll automatically criticize anything ITG related. Your post doesn't even warrant more of a response than this because this is just another ITG bitch fest. So many of your posts are emotionally charged rants that basically boil down to you not accepting that ITG is a good game and is a good direction for four arrow games to be headed in. Any competitive game has elitists. The best DDR players moved onto ITG so yes, there are more "Elite" ITG players. Moron.
