February 15, 2007, 06:46:57 PM - ORIGINAL POST -

So some dudes had a lady to swoon over for V-day. Others did not. Many of us try to get a lady, but are met with "UR DOING IT WRONG!!" and "epic fail". Some words of wisdom from the lady-types would be much appreciated.

And eye contact. That's key.

I'm surprised nobody pointed out how difficult this is for about half of the members of PNWbemani. Wink

My current girlfriend of 4 years and I got together after being good friends all of our freshman years in college.

Uh, really?  And how many years were you a freshman in college? Tongue

Yes.  Always.

On topic: I usually hesitate to give advice on these things, because I think that "getting a girlfriend" (or boyfriend) just for the sake of HAVING a girlfriend (or boyfriend) is a really bad idea.  But my curiosity has now been sparked.  I don't see anyone mentioning the things *I* think are important, and I wonder whether that's because I'm the only person weird enough to see them.

So: I think that people in general are drawn to those with passionate natures.  The very, very few people that I've been drawn to (in amorous and non-amorous ways) have been those who are just crazy-nerdy about things, and for whom that passion is (1) overflowing and (2) manifested in deep knowledge, ability, etc.  This can be a passion for something I love, like electronics, music, whatever, or for something I'm indifferent to, like botany, dollmaking, and so on.  It can even be just a generalized passion for life.

If you're more cynical and/or more interested in relationships than in deep relationships, remember the poet: "People love you not for who you are but for who they are with you."  Be someone who makes others happy and they'll love you (if that's something they need).  Be someone who lends others courage and they'll love you (if that's something they want).  Be someone who inspires others to achievement and they'll love you (if that's something they care about).  Be the life of the party.  Be the life of the board meeting.  Be the life of your life.

And don't be oblivious.  Please.  I knew this adorable nerd-boy in my first two years of college who was just exceedingly brilliant and passionate about everything he did.  He was the kind of person who could talk for hours and people would be spellbound.  Even if they didn't know what the hell he was talking about.  He would occasionally complain about how he couldn't meet girls, or something to that effect.  He would also bite the head off any cute girl who walked up to him with one of those incredibly transparent I'm-just-looking-for-an-excuse-to-talk-to-you questions (and there were many).  They would slink away in shame after his verbal lashing and never speak to him again.  It was really funny because it wasn't happening to me, but I suspect it wasn't funny to him when he grew up and figured out that he was chasing off actual girls.  So do yourself a favor and don't be that guy.

Nope, not everyone, and not in general. I could care less if some girl is passionate about something I don't care about. It won't be a reason not to go out with her, but it isn't attractive just because she's passionate about something.

Attraction is very different, and you can't just generalize it that simply.  Tongue   I'm attracted to people who stand up for themselves when they're right and won't let anyone push them around or back down. That's very different than a passion for basket weaving or music, as it's more a characteristic trait than them happening to really like something.

Attraction is much more primal than simply liking to play games together. It's too abstract to really pinpoint, but I think we have all felt it at one time or another.

Okay, then, s/people/women.

And agree or disagree with my comments about passion, you can't argue with my point about not being oblivious. Wink

Umm, I like hot girls.
This varies from person to person as to what's attractive and how high the scale they're going after, but I'm not going to marry anyone that's ugly (to me).

All guys prefer girls that are higher on their measuring stick, and physical attractiveness happens to be a common and huge component of that measuring stick.  I'm not sure why everyone's stating that obvious fact though, we all know whoever says otherwise is weeeeeeeeeeird

heh, i said that because you guys were talking about attraction so i said something any typical average guy would say... i just didn't want to sound like much more of a jerk when i stated that (cuz believe it or not, there are girls on the forum)

anyways, i am attracted to girls which appearance is on a high scale (at least i would think) but like what was mentioned earlier, whats "hot" differs from other peoples eyes

Ah, misuse of the plural there.

My metric for hotness? Um in general I like women who are relatively strong-willed, though at the same time it can make relationships a bit infuriating if at the same time they aren't open to new experiences =P I think in high school I described it best, "they have to have some kind of unique feature."  I got some laughs from that and the girls in the class seemed to look at me funny, but ah well, it's what I feel.

Could you refer to it as a "scale" please: I have a terribly dirty mind. ;P

Anyway, I think I might be well enough today for drag pics, although I don't have much.  I've got my skirt I play DDR in and lots of semifeminine shirts.  I'll try to style my hair so it blocks out my huge masculine eyebrows and then that should cover everything. xD
I don't know anything about makeup, so you may have to use your imaginations to fill in the blanks there.
