November 01, 2011, 10:04:24 PM - ORIGINAL POST -

So I've been working on this the past few days.

Are these really only the communities left alive?  Are there states that have a preference to one music game site verses the others?

I'd love if anyone has updates before this goes live.

I would say that (it seems like) a majority of the midwest and southern players hang out on the AIJ forums. I know AIJ isn't a geographically specific Bemani forum like ours, but I just had to share my 2-cents. =D

Also, I think the Western half of Idaho is more affiliated with us than BG. The Southern part of Idaho is definitely BG, but Moscow, Core d'Lane and the Northern parts are much closer to us.

Edit: How the frick did they come up with a name like 'Maine DDR Consortium'!?

I am pretty sure there is still a community along the east coast - cheetos, sfxazure and xenonscreams went/go to the University of Maryland and may be able to better comment on this.  I am pretty sure most people just use AIJ, though.

Is there any groups from Hawaii? Hell, are there any players left in Hawaii at all!?

I'll add in UIUC, they're large enough to deserve being on the map!
I'll add AIJ hotspots to the map, and adjust Western Idaho a bit.
No idea about Hawaii.

If you guys know any other regions and their site of choice to post to (anything in California anymore)?  I'll shade it too.

Cali used to be nearly exclusively DDR Freak 'back in the day'. But I don't know how they interact these days. Most Cali players I know/knew of are in college, so perhaps it's all just inner-collegiate interactions and not much more.

That was the case for me while I was at college in Pullman. Null and I were the only two on the forums, but at one point we had 10+ decent and regular DDR/ITG players we'd meet up with regularly. They just didn't feel the need to visit any bemani-related forums.

Yeah, DDR Freak was very California-based, but it wasn't exclusively for Cali players; the forums still had meaning even if you didn't live/haven't lived there.  I used to post there until I heard about the DDR Jamz Global BBS.  Similarly, it was a mostly PNW-centric forum despite the name, but again, there still was general DDR and off-topic discussion that could be useful even if you didn't live there.

If we're going to post now-defunct sites, shouldn't we include the Global Jamz BBS in there too?

I know these are somewhat tangent, but what about zenius-i-vanisher.com and the stepmania.com forum? (they both seem pretty sizeable.)

Oh, you're right. I thought John had them lumped up with Bemanistyle.net. Rhythmatic is all-but-dead these days. I think BemaniStyle, ZIV, and AIJ are the top bemani communities on the net. (Sorry John, I lub PNW, but we have to be realistic here) =D

This is correct. Beatgamer is now mostly Southern and South-Eastern Idaho, Montana and Utah. We have reached out to Vegas, Colorado and Wyoming but Vegas seems to be posting elsewhere, and both Colorado and Wyoming have dropped off the face of the earth (has anyone heard from anybody in either of those states? I messaged a couple of Colorado people about a big Utah tournament earlier this year but never heard back from anyone).

No defunct sites in the chart. So no DDRFreak, or anything even more abandoned. Everything needs to be current and active.

That's why I asked! Smiley  I'm not trying to be unrealistic, I just don't know where everyone posts anymore.

I looked at Z-i-V's regional forums, and only a few threads were active. The rest of the site was, but not the regional section.

The goal of this chart is to be about regions and communities, not a list of general Bemani sites for all of the US.

PS: Drop the H in the Jon.  Wink

I'd argue that people from all over the US just use the general threads for communication because they probably don't have any local forums to use. By showing the remaining parts of the USA hatched, you imply that BemaniStyle and Rhythmatic.net make up the remainder. What I'm saying is that, like BemaniStyle, I think ZIV and AIJ are a catch-all for people without a local community forum. Certainly more-so than Rhythmatic.

Btw, I like how the ENTIRE TOP OF THE MAP is dedicated to RGCanada. It made me lol once I realized that it was there.

Someone figure out when their next tournament is and I offer to drive us up there. We'll wreck their shit on 9s hehe

I gotta get a passport, but then Tony and I are game to drive up there for their next event.  I actually have a friend up there who I've been meaning to see anyway (I don't think he plays dance games anymore, so we don't have to worry about him being on their side.)

This made me lol, because I think it's the only thing the majority of us could beat them on.

From everything I can see, it looks like us and MMG are the two largest and still active regional DDR websites.

If you could get the info, it'd be neat to put how many registered users each forum has. Though this doesn't really prove anything, since sites like DDR Freak could claim hundred thousand + users, though over time most just disappeared.

I was wondering why ddrstl is listed so far to the north, near chicago...  Their website seems to be down too.  I would think they'd be closer to st louis, since their name stands for ddr st louis?

I'm from the midwest, but never heard of them, although I'm more ITG oriented.  Maybe, I'll ask my friend who lives near st louis if she's heard of them.

The thing about usercounts is that they'd most likely be inaccurate.  Quite a good portion of them would be spambots, which would throw off the actual total on our site, let alone a highly bot-infested site like DDRFreak.  I'm willing to bet that most of the 10-odd guests that are signed into this site at any given time aren't actual people.

And as you stated, the count could also include members that haven't visited the site in a long time.  An "active" user count that counts only actual people who've logged into the site in the last, say, month or so would be better.  Considering the total usercounts are only in the hundreds, the number of active users could be counted by hand.
