March 13, 2014, 07:00:06 PM - ORIGINAL POST -

Hello,

My name is Chris and I am going to open a arcade, cafe, and dance floor in downtown Olympia next summer (no alcohol). As hopefully my future customers, I am trying to get an idea of what you guys may want. I already have started my business plan and have 10 arcade machines (yes one of them is Dance Dance Revolution 4th mix!) My goal for the arcade it to preserve the American Arcade scene for generations to come. I know there are a lot of nay sayers out there, but I love arcades/games/and the great people/community they attract and wont give up. Look forward to your input and seeing you guys at the grand opening on June 05, 2015!!!

Hi Chris, it sounds fantastic. A little bit of a drive for me but definitely plan on checking it out.

I cant help but be bias, I think In The Groove dedicab (a non-converted cab) would be amazing. I know there are some players who live down south closer to Olympia who make the time to drive up all the way to ACME in Tukwilia. So having an arcade with some current local favorites could only help attract future loyal customers.

I 2nd an In The Groove 2 (dedicated cab) for the place. I'd be there more frequently, because god knows I need to stay in shape! I live in Lacey, so the drive is nice.

Other bemani games would be nice like: pop'n music, drum mania, and a DDR Extreme. These titles are classic rhythm based games. Not really sure what else you could throw in there to spice things up - non-rhythm based games. Pump it Up would be cool too.

Chris,

You are my hero. I love arcades and am glad to see someone fighting the assumption that they can't survive. I don't live near Olympia, but if you host tournaments or anything at a later point, I may try and make a trip down to visit your establishment. I wish you the absolute best of luck and great success!

I look forward to visiting! Like NSX says, a few other music game standards would be nice too (though he left out IIDX!) Most of the successful/surviving arcades in the states that I'm aware of have a good set of fighting games too, so it may be something to consider.

Every one. Thanks for the thoughtful comments. I do plan on having tournaments called Master Matches and will have COS PLAY theme days when people can dress up as there favorite anime, game, cartoon etc icon and receive some type of free cover charge or discount. I will continue to get more of the games that you desire after the business is up in running. As we all know machines are expensive and require maintenance. I also also currently own fighting games, shooting games, driving games, and even a flight sim. I will continue to update and look forward to seeing yall next year during the grand opening. Hopefully, I can do a little something to revive the American Arcade scene.

-Sincerely,
  Chris F.

Dance floor?  Nice. Cheesy

I'm pleading ignorance here, how are you going to start a dance floor and get people to dance without alcohol?  Can I assume your demographics will be in the younger crowd?

Good Question about the dance floor. There will be no alcohol sold at the business. The business will be for gamers starting from kids to adults during the weekdays and normal business hours. On Fridays and Saturday starting at 0930 PM weekends it will be a 18+ club! This will be called "Adult Swim". The Adult swim will allow me to target the 18-20 year crowds who are adults but really cant go out and have fun due to every other business selling alcohol. This is a often forgotten group of people that hopefully get a safe and fun intro into night life and arcades! As for dancing, hopefully I ll be a good enough MC and I will place classic music too from different genres. Trying to do something for everyone and share my passion. Ohh and did I mention there will be COSPLAY events too! Thats right opening day will be COSPLAYtheme= VIDEO GAME ICONS! All who dress up get a special gift. Hope too see ya there fellow gamers!

This question in and of itself is a sad commentary to me. It's the same as when people tell me how much I drink before I go up for karaoke. The answer is 0 drinks.

Don't get me wrong, I love beer and a good margarita, but people shouldn't need it to have fun.

Bump from the dead; I forgot about this post.  On the topic of alcohol, I wholeheartedly agree with you.  However, alcohol sells.  Alcohol is a quick way to get rid of the nerves and find someone to dance with.  People shouldn't need it to have fun, but this is very past reality.

That being said, I give OP props for starting a place with a dance floor without alcohol.  There needs to be more without booze because in my experience, it would filter out a lot of douchebags.

Hey Guys!

MOTA XD here. Still really excited about the grand opening on June 05, 2015 in Olympia hope to see yall there. Quick question, I am acquiring my arcade games for my gamer. Which one is better DDR or Pump it Up Arcade. I really care about my gamers and your opinion. Thanks and comment below.

With DDR it is almost impossible to get the latest mix, so I'd advise against it. With PIU, try go get a GX style PIU PRIME machine, or try to get an ITG2 dedicab. Those would probably be the 2 most popular options!

Here's how I always saw it:

DDR is more popular and recognizable, even by non-hardcore gamers. PiU has a fiercely loyal sect of players, but they're fewer in number than those that play DDR. It also seems that if you're not running the latest PiU versions, those players will quickly relocate to the location that does.

DDR players (the hardcore ones) usually just want a machine that works reliably well and doesn't cost an arm and a leg to play. Yes, having the latest and greatest version would be fantastic, but getting a popular older mix is also enticing. 5th Mix, 7th Mix (MAX), Extreme are all solid older versions that are probably cheap to acquire.

Also, I would 9/10 play a DDR mix over PiU, but that's because I suck at 5 panel. Don't get me wrong, 5 panel is still really fun to play, but I don't get as serious about it as I do 4 panel.

Should consider either a popular DDR mix or an ITG at this point

PIU i dont know anything about though but Im speaking in regards to the fact that new DDRs are network locked and the US network service got shut down by konami

Hello there Gamers,

Unfortunately I will not be able to meet the original scheduled open date in June. Main reason is due  compliance and permit which are required by the City of Olympia and A LOT of red tape. However, with a little bit of determination we are looking at a mid summer opening for MOTA XD Olympia's arcade. As of May 29, 2015, I have officially signed a lease and acquired a space for YOUR arcade. It is located at 112 State Avenue NE Olympia, WA 98506! I will be loading the arcade machines in there this week. Drive or swing by and see the "work in progress" over the next few weeks. If you see me in there don't be shy and stop by to say hi. I love meeting my fellow gamers. Until then, keep calm and GAME ON!
